SEO Question - Full title in URL

I've noticed that Ning URL's don't have the full title of posts which hurts  with SEO

For example, my blog post How to: Build an Awesome Government Facebook Page with Tons of Fans and Engagement

has the URL http://www.govloop.com/profiles/blogs/how-to-build-an-awesome

This hurts me as I'm trying to rank on terms like "Government Facebook Page"

Anyone have any ideas?  Are there SEO changes in the future product?

  • Compares this to a TechCrunch article like http://techcrunch.com/2011/01/21/postup-acquires-ubertwitter-rename...
  • I agree that there is little upside to placing such limitations on the length of URLs.

Kind of reminds me of the Y2K issue where old, old systems economized on storage space by eliminating two digits. That made sense in 1950 when storage was expensive, but not in the 1990's and certainly not in 2011.

Would it really cost Ning that much money to all us to use 60 or even 100 character URL's? If so, go ahead and raise the monthly fee by the $0.25 or whatever it would cost.

  • I am in total agreement with Steve on this issue.  It simply makes no sense why we can't have full title as part of URL.  At least provide 60 characters or so.

  • Hi Steve,

Just an update on this. As some follow-on work from the URL controls we added a few days ago, we'll be bumping the maximum length of the url slugs from 30 to 65.

    Thanks,

    Phil
