The main reason why members are not coming back to your site!

Members are trying to connect with there friends not with 10,000 members, this is why 90% of our members won't come back. no wonder why facebook is so popular.

Here is list that we want change from NING : -

 

1.The choice for us (creators) to change and show only friends activity in latest activity feed. (Important)

 

2.The choice for us (creators) to change the default privacy settings for members and set it to private(only friends) (Very Very important for safety reasons)

 

3.The choice for us (creators) to change the chat or make the chat private and show only friends of members in ning chat and hide the non friends members from chat. Many members didnt speak with ning chat becouse non friend members is speak to them in chat and do not want to talk to non-friends!!!

 

4. (Hide the public box-room in ning chat) Make the ning chat only for private messaging between friends members only.

 

5, The Chat room, Members didnt want to talk in public. Members want to talk only private and only with friends members. Want to stay online and only friends members can see them and talking with them in chat.

just because Marshall's network is geared around skateboarders doesn't mean it's not a social network, it happens to be a skaters social network!

 Honestly, i don't have any problems with the chat, works fine on my network. 

Have you got alot of third party apps and such on your network? things like that can slow them down, and make other apps you add to it drag as well.

Actually, all 5 points in this comments were absolutely accurate.  I am facing the exactly same issues with respect to activity feed and chatbox.

One thing I do believe that ning can do it in matter of seconds is allow creators (super users) to set default privacy settings for their users.  We are no longer in 2004 when facebook did not need privacy to grow.  It has become a big issue and I prefer that by default Ning should make the network very private (Friends Only) network and based on network need users/creators should then be able to expand on their settings.  

That way - when a new user who joins the new community - can feel secure that any content that he/she publishes during initial learning period, the reach will be very limited.  As he/she feels more comfortable, they can then expand upon their privacy settings and reach out to greater audience.  The privacy issue is never about I inadvertently only reached 10 people when I meant to reach to 100 or 100,000.  Privacy come into play when I wanted to reach only 10 and because of my network setting (set by administrator for a convenient blame), I inadvertently reached out to 100,000 (the case where google + developer reached out to the whole company).

 This really needs to be corrected.  It's a major hassle.  I very much have to broadcast new user to set their privacy settings to "Friends Only" as soon as they sign up.  I say that to them in their introductory emails and so on and so forth when ning can do that in a matter of a second by allowing network creators to do that to begin with. 

I have read many of the comments and what I would like to say is - what Ning offers is a network that is good for one to many relationships.  For example, this network is good if you are a singer, actor, talk show host and you need to communicate with many fans.  Or teachers can communicate with their students and then students can communicate among themselves on ning network and it will work like a charm.

But, as soon as the networking goes into many-many relatonship - this network just does not handle it well.  It's just not designed for it.  I am working with a very good developer and she recently mentioned something that really stuck with me - basically trying to make Many-Many relationship in ning network is like fitting an orange in an apple!  The product is simply not designed for that.

For that - it's either facebook or building your product own your own.  There are many other scripts out there so one can check on that as well. 

Ning is a good platform but not meant for few applications.

I am tired of asking them so i am gonna change my site to blog site, no more social network. finally i noticed i made a mistake when i thought ning is a good site for social network, they are focusing on blog, group and stuff. Members not connecting with there friends Period!
