Members are trying to connect with there friends not with 10,000 members, this is why 90% of our members won't come back. no wonder why facebook is so popular.
Here is list that we want change from NING : -
1.The choice for us (creators) to change and show only friends activity in latest activity feed. (Important)
2.The choice for us (creators) to change the default privacy settings for members and set it to private(only friends) (Very Very important for safety reasons)
3.The choice for us (creators) to change the chat or make the chat private and show only friends of members in ning chat and hide the non friends members from chat. Many members didnt speak with ning chat becouse non friend members is speak to them in chat and do not want to talk to non-friends!!!
4. (Hide the public box-room in ning chat) Make the ning chat only for private messaging between friends members only.
5, The Chat room, Members didnt want to talk in public. Members want to talk only private and only with friends members. Want to stay online and only friends members can see them and talking with them in chat.
Thank you

Your 1-5 is facebook and if that's what your members are looking for your right there wouldn't be any reason for them to come back to your network when they can just use facebook for the features you described.
We don't have any issues with our members not coming back to our network, they keep coming back because there looking to connect with like mined people with the same passion and interest. We provide them with content their not going to find on facebook well not in one convent place any how.
I'm not sure what your network is about but to me it sounds like you need to rethink why and what your network is about. If our members where just looking to connect with their friends I wouldn't waste my time trying to compete with facebook.

Permalink Reply by Speed Racer on March 1, 2011 at 10:23pm I like the idea of the friends activity feed somewhat, but, im trying to understand why you want to control your members privacy settings. They can control their own, so why take away a choice they can make? It seems to me if you did this, you would make it hard for your members to network.
As far as the chat on one members screen only showing the members who are their friends in the chat, that would be nearly impossible, i think what you would like is an instant messenger type setup, and either Skysa or Wibiya may fit your needs better here. To do that with Ning's chat would probably take 5 floors of dedicated servers and a team of employees just to manage it. I personally, as I'm sure many other members would be quite upset if ning turned their chat into just an instant messenger tool. Our members, as I'm sure many others enjoy meeting new people and chatting on the live chat. The current chat has private messaging, simply click the name in the list, select private message and you have a one on one private live conversation.
All in all, with all due respect to your needs, the things you suggest above seem to take the "social" out of social network. JMHO.

""just to manage it. I personally, as I'm sure many other members would be quite upset if ning turned their chat into just an instant messenger tool. Our members, as I'm sure many others enjoy meeting new people and chatting on the live chat."" The reason you said this is because i am sure you are just now managing under 500 members,
but you will understand when you start managing over 17,000 members.
* Over 100 members chatin on the main lobby? you kidding me!!!
* I want my members to connect with there friends, not with 17,000 members, its not possible even tho!
have you wonder why peoples are hooked and addicted on facebook? thats because they want to stay connected with there friends.
Sorry for my English
Thank you,

one of the busiest networks on Ning is This Is 50, which is the rap star 50 Cent's network. it has over half a million members, and they use the standard chat! it gets a little crazy at times, i was on there and some 270+ people were on it and the chat was moving pretty fast. Like I stated above, you may want to look into Skysa or Wibiya, as they (I believe) have what's similar to what you are looking to accomplish. For the record, too, facebook chat looks a whole lot like Meebo, so they may have a solution that fits your needs as well.

This is 50 is Entertainment Blog Community site, but Ning should give us the choice for who those peoples who runs SOCIAL NETWORK SITE, the choice for (creators) to change the chat or make the chat private and show only friends of members in ning chat and hide the non friends members from chat.

Permalink Reply by Kat on March 3, 2011 at 11:40am I was about to suggest that myself. With the customization hacks, members can create their own little worlds within your site. The only difference will be the lack of blogs, but they could use blogger or something similar. Just have them put their pages on private and make their groups private as well. They can embed their videos and pictures into their group if needed (and I believe that there are privacy settings for those as well).
xat is a decent group chat that I used for a while. It's cheesy, but it gets the job done.
