Sorry for my late response. The @ function help to easily direct a comment or a message to specific user. It is basically the twitter function that has been adopted by practically every major networking site.
If you were to reply to my post using @jayferrari on twitter or facebook I would have known that you were talking to me but unfortunately that is not the case.
This is technology that we need on our sites.
