whats up with Tokbox thats a ning app and it works great
Its not possible to censor news like this
Its all over the internet--see here http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-14060069
My Question was--How can Ning compete with a free service that offers much better Chat
or to put it differently --How are we Network Creators going to entice our members to pay for something that does not yet offer what Google+ and Facebook offer for free?
I dont think it helps to bury your head in the sand like an ostrich--I think it is a fair question which Ning should answer fairly.
Hey, Mark. Please don't copy and paste the same thing again and again in multiple discussions. Not a big fan of cross-posting.
We aren't a video chat sharing service. We're focused on creating custom social networks. Maybe at some point we'll integrate a video chat, but for now I would recommend using a third-party service like Tokbox, embed a Skype button, etc.
I don't see this as a competition between Ning and Facebook, although you clearly do. Do you want a solution where all of the pages are branded without your brand and message, not configurable or customizable, not findable in Google search, won't allow you to view anyone's email address, won't allow you to run ads, charge members, won't let you use third-party widgets of your choice, change a font, or in any other realistic way have ownership over your community and its content? There are a lot of differences in the basic approach, but the main question I would ask: Do you want ownership of a community or business and the potential to monetize that, or do you want to be the moderator of an online group? We offer the former.
Or to put it differently: How could Mark Halbert entice his Facebook friends to pay for membership in his Facebook Group?
Just read your reply and this line struck me:
"Do you want ownership of a community or business and the potential to monetize that, or do you want to be the moderator of an online group? We offer the former."
I'm pleased you said that - because that is exactly what I'm looking for from NING. I've not been successful unfortunately, which I agree is probably down to my lack of business ability as a NC.
Nice to hear it stated though - but its making me think once again about what i must be doing wrong.
I am also trying to understand this myself. I actually have a developer looking into making me a flashchat voice/video chatroom that will also have a irc trivia bot for entertainment
He has made other apps for me that are hosted on my slicehost server and i am very confident he can do this also.
Because I know little to nothing about this type of work-I am worried that whatever it is that he uses to make all this "Magic" happen(integrated with Ning User ID's/Profiles so users are automatically logged in with their IDs) may be in some way against Nings TOS-I have heard others that i asked to make this say it would be in violation-but I also see Skysa and others making it happen.
Can you tell me a link or maybe explain some what can and cannot be done when making an app like this?
Thats really a big concern to me right now-that I spend the time and money to make this happen-then have it canned at the Ning level because I did not understand what was/was not acceptable.
Thanks for any help you can give
Hey, Curtis. I can absolutely understand that covering all of your bases is important. I think that's a great idea. We have a developer network here that might be the best place for you or your developer to ask any detailed tech-based questions. It's made explicitly for these types of questions, so I hope we can get all the answers you need.
