Would suggest adding a TAB along the top menu - called Members, include several dedicated pages suchs as:
New Members Introductions
Member 2 member Comments
How to Zing with Ning
How to - use chatroom, add photos, add youtube, add etc etc...
As well as this consider adding a wibiya bar, this will then allow you to add more direct links to specific PAGES in your network using their navigation Links app, that isnt subject to the 10 links limit per tab in tab menus.
In our case we have used both to good effect.
When i welcome a new member, as we are a PRIVATE members forum I can phone each new member up and then give them a online web tour. Using both the Wibiay bar and TABBED Menus I have created a step by step guided tour that then shows members how to use the basic features of Ning from which they then can explore the possibilities with ease.
Alternatley - create your own snippets how to use Ning, heres one I created:How to UPLOAD Photos
Thanks for this Seymour, I may use some of your advises, but this is still not exactly what I'm looking for.
I have a Code Of Conduct tab in the menu and on the front page, however - I feel most people do not read it. I would love a feature like there is upon registration on many website, that once you register you receive an e-mail (or upon first visit land up on a welcome page) where you get the basics explained.
I used to do it in private messages, but now I simply won't have time as network is not the main thing I do and is just after hours.
I used to also create video whiteboard snippets using an online whiteboard, this was great - then the software company disappeared.
Can do the same thing on Youtube, but instead of whiteboarding you would have to video it and edit it to suit.
QUESTION - anyone know of a current whiteboarding facility that allows you to create online demos of using software?
In that case LOOK at wibiya bar as a solution, there are a lot of analytical tools, social media integration and above all the possibility to create a SPLASH ANNOUCEMENT screen for "all" members to read on a timed based, or alternately tiggered on a keyword in a page - such as "new members" - so you can create a welcome splash screen of sorts with a bit of work.
Its not the answer, but it goes a long way to helping assist you in managing and promoting your site to your members.
But what is needed is membership levels... that way as creators we could monitor and track new members progress and OFFER HELP where it is needed. So any newbies could be helped before they become non-members.
At the moment the only way to identify new members is to look at the most recent approvals list, whereas whats needed is a facility to identify members who havent used any of the services on your site - so you can drop them a line to see if they need help, or alternalty remove them from the site if they have moved on...
