Who’s up for some beta action?
As we’ve been doing a lot lately, we want to share an upcoming feature before it's available for everyone with our most dedicated NCs — Network Creators. It’s our way of getting feedback on what we’re working on so it will be successful when it’s ready to be used on your network.
This week, we’re turning on Email Digests here on the Creators Network. Obviously, this will not be available to your members on your network, but you can get an idea of how it will work for your members by turning it on.
How to turn it on
That’s it. You’ll now receive a digest that summarizes the discussions you’re following instead of receiving email notifications every time someone responds in a discussion.
If you’re the type of person who is really active on Creators, this might not allow you to stay on top of all of the conversation, but if you simply want to be updated about the major happenings on Creators, Email Digests might just be for you. In any case, you are welcome to try it both ways.
A few details to keep in mind about this beta:
Of course, we want to know what you think. Specifically, we want to know what you like and don't like about the Digest feature, as well as what options or controls you'd like to see.
Just wanted to let you know that our next release of email digest improvements will include a change so that forum discussion notifications link right to the comment. Thanks for your feedback!
Thank you Santa Evan -- my feedback AND OTHERS TOO! Looking forward to the more useful digest. I had switched back to individual so I could find ALL the new posts.
Any chance you'll pop down the chimney with the other thing highest on my list? (I've been good! Except for occasionally getting into "whine" mode here, LOL)
Lordy, what I wouldn't give to have a listing of ALL activities that was cumulative, and a daily digest would be one way, not the optimal way (the optimal way would be a cumulative Latest Activity visible only to Network Admins. I can't see this would be any programming challenge!)
It is soooooo handicapping, as an NC, to know only the last 20 things which happened on my network. That is ludicrous limitation, it grossly interferes with my ability to manage my network!!!! Information is power!!!
Wishing all the hard-working Ning staff a most joyful holiday, sending great appreciation for your good intentions and diligent efforts!
The email digest works like a charm. Only problem is with forums like here on creators where you have chosen the layout where your reply is placed immediately below and to the right of the post (I forget the name of this layout lol).
In email digest you are then not taken to this post because it might be 10 people who replied in various locations and now the creators layout suddenly is not so cool. Fortunately I myself personally dislike this layout and have the normal layout on all my networks so when I get email digest I'm taken to the end of the thread where consequently the last 10 posts will be :)
I also have a question: what is the "new content" section of the email digest? People I have chosen to "follow"?
In fact, based on NC feedback we're going to redesign the digests a bit to make it easier to follow discussions and comments. Instead of each comment taking up its own line and citing the discussion, we've redesigned the email to make it easy to figure out which comments are part of which discussions — and to access the actual comment itself. Like so:
As for New Content, you hit the nail on the head. That's content from a person you're following (as in, I'm following new blog posts from Brian). Or new discussions you're following (as in, I'm following all new discussions in the "Announcements" category on Creators).
"Threaded" and "unthreaded", Brian. I have my network set to "unthreaded" like you, and Creators is threaded. Threaded is nice in some ways, but ultimately crazy-making....
I've been in a social network where each member could control, on each page, whether they wanted to view the page in threaded mode, unthreaded mode (with latest last) or, (blessed option for active discussions) "Newest First" mode, so latest was at the top of the page!!!!
But there are many things higher than that on my "wish list" for Ning changes, LOL! Such as the ability to see a complete history of Latest Activity items for my network. Such an obvious need for managing a network. Is there already such a thing and I just don't know how to access it? And how do you all have the illusion you are managing a network when you don't have access to any actions other than the latest 20 items?
Is there already a discussion about that desired function which I could go post in? Should I start one?
Such as the ability to see a complete history of Latest Activity items for my network.
Massive ditto to this, OM.
You can put the RSS feed from the latest activity into an RSS reader. I use this trick to keep track of all the activity on my network and I tell my admins to do the same.
I still would like a "more" button at the bottom of the latest activity module, like on facebook. Members often want to go further back and check out what has been happening since last, and why would we deny them this extra curiosity ?
Oh my gosh, Brian, you have no idea what you have just enabled for us!!!! Wow to the max!!!
Now I have to go into my site in IE, because the RSS Feed icons don't seem to work in Chrome. Unless anyone knows something I don't about that?? All I see is a greyed RSS icon, and when I click on it I see a page of HTML code displayed.....
THANK YOU! I see now I could have figured out this strategy had I not given up on RSS icons so not even noticing that one there!!
It would be nice if the email digests could have the same "amount of text" options that are in the current email controls. See photo below. This way, I can set the daily digest emails to only give content teasers (200 words or less) and not the full content requiring people to go to the Website for the full content.
Hey Carlos, the idea sounds great. I hope it will be implemented.
Smile, you are in Lagos!
