This is a Twitter limitation. So since people oftentimes post their statuses to Facebook AND Twitter, they had to limit the characters.
I suggested once that we have the ability to uncheck the Twitter box and then the character limit would increase. Check the Twitter box and the character limit goes back to 140. No one liked the idea but me, apparently. LOL
