Some Network Creators use third-party apps and widgets on their sites. Maybe you use a few or have tried a few over time. Some are undoubtedly better than others. These toolbars and can help you offer members an alternative to functionality that Ning provides, provide something Ning doesn’t provide, or maybe offer unique ways for your members to connect around your community.
I was doing some research into a few of these, and I am curious what you think about Conduit. It’s a toolbar that you can customize and offer to your community as a way to extend the reach of your site or just keep your core members more connected. I want to get some feedback from people here on Creators about what this toolbar is, what it does, and whether or not you think it would be something that would interest you and your members. If you’ve used Conduit before, I’d love to hear your thoughts about it. If you haven’t, I’d still love to hear your thoughts.
What is it, exactly? It’s a toolbar that you can customize for your community. You can add links, RSS feeds, games, gadgets and apps to the toolbar. These can point back to your community, or you might even put affiliate links in them if you think that is something your members would use. The idea is to create an extension of your community that perhaps your most fervent users would want to use. They talk about their toolbar here.
What do you think?
We created a very basic, rudimentary toolbar just to show you a stripped down example you can check out here.
So, what do you think? Is Conduit something that sounds interesting to you and your members?
Okay, that's interesting, soaringeagle. Thanks for the example, too.
Just out of interest, and no offence meant, but why are people bothered about an Alexa Ranking? It's at best smoke and mirrors - they don't have access to our analytics or truly know about our traffic (i've checked mine and it's way off). Just wondering
Woah just like what I did like a year ago
then Skysa and Wibiya came out so i stopped using Conduit
When i heard this today I went to Conduit logged in and found that i have earned $6 with 27 installs
I liked Conduit because I could send out RSS Feed to people who installed my toolbar straight to their desktop.
So I think this is really nice Ning
Huh. Well, it's good to hear that it appears to have at least sort of earned you money (although I think their payout level is something like $50). Thanks, Ace!
Yea is because it was for like 4 days on my site
I dropped Wibiya because it slowed down my load time and experienced outages at times which was an annoyance. Have never used Conduit but am completely happy using Skysa the last few years. Very dependable, easy to install/alter, customizable not to mention a boatload of apps totally free in their basic package.
I created a conduit toolbar back when JenSocial was the Ning Directory, with a ton of links and tips for Ning Network Creators. Back then it did okay, but not a lot of $ earned. I did receive a good deal of traffic, so it was worth the trouble. The members who really liked it, used it a lot. In fact I still use it for the Ning specific activity, most every day. You can see it here: http://ningdirectory.ourtoolbar.com/
If you mouseover the Ning Links, you'll see some great links for Ning Network Creators. Anyone who wants to use it, feel free.
Success or Failure Story:
After Ning went back towards white label (YAY!) I abandoned the process as far as future enhancements and updates. However, I would never delete it if even 2 members were still using it, and they are. During it's heyday it was incredibly helpful, and like I mentioned I still utilize it every day. For JenSocial, it just no longer made sense to keep a Ningcentric bar. So, earnings were somewhat a failure, but again, the activity and making members happy was a total success. In the beginning I had 400 installs almost overnight. Today there are 11 left. However, we should blame the overall earnings failure, and today's low installations on my not maintaining or advertising the bar any longer.
I may revive it in the future for VIP Members of JenSocial, since the club is Ning specific.
Hope that helps,
As usual, Jen, you have provided seriously awesome feedback -- it's practically a case study! Thank you.
Oh good, my pleasure. I was afraid it may be TMI.
I'm using Wibiya, and I see it's search tool show better result than Ning's search.
The conduit toolbar is great-I have had 1 for a couple years now. I encourage member to download it to receive the latest content delivereed right to their browser-AND NOW the new Coupon Buddy app that you can add has been paying off really nicely each month averaging around $75/month.
The Conduit paychecks always come on time-I give them a thumbs up!
(keep in mind I am referring to the Conduit toolbar that users download-not the toolbar like Skysa, that displays on your site on page load)
Personally, these tool bars are not for me. When I see Ning networks (any site for that matter) using them I think they look cluttered. Having said that, I've not tried one, so I don't know if they do actually boost activity etc. I'll take a look.
