Good news - it`s time to announce the release of the Chat Feature on Ning 3.0 platform.

Today we are happy to provide you with the opportunity to chat with other members of your Ning Network in the most convenient and efficient way. To facilitate your community management experience, we have added several new options:

  • New design
  • Customizable notifications
  • Message counter
  • Ability to create and manage groups (rename, add photos, delete and add users, block users)
  • Ability to send files

With this release, you can customize notifications in accordance with your needs, rename your groups, add photos and users, use a message counter to monitor the number of messages, delete the messages you don’t need, send files, and suspend members from chat. • I have tested it with friends.  It shows them being online when they are not.  It seems there are some bugs to work out.

  • Sound is not working in Firefox or Chrome

    • Hi Kos,

      Just checked the sound and it seems to be working fine on my test network. Could you please tell me are you using a custom sound for the chat? If so could you please tell what is the extension of the file so we could perform the proper testing.

      Looking forward to hearing from you.

      Best regards,

      Ning Team.

      • Kyryl you must be the magic charm because low and behold......the sound began working today.  *lol*   Amazing how that happens, isn't it.  Thanks!

        Just get me a URL to embed and I'll be a happy camper.

        • Hi Kos!

          Regarding the Url to embed. Please check the third page with comments under this post. I have posted one solution there maybe it's not the best one but it's working :-).

          Regards,

          Ning Team.

  • This thing is so quirky, I am having a hell of a time trying to create a group.

    And when I tried to delete the conversation or random text i had in the main group.

    I just erased the whole Group and cant get it back.

    Can someone take another look at the new chat?

    • Hi there!

      In order to create the group, it's necessary to add at least to other participants to the private chat, after that it would be a group and you will be able to change its name, logo etc.

      Best regards,

      Ning Team.

  • Diane I believe it's for 3.0 only at this point.  Maybe they'll let us know when it'll be available for 2.0

    On the new chat, I don't see a way to pop it out.  Some like to 'embed' it on its own page and others just want the pop out and close the site.  Please advise.........need this!

    • Hi Kos,

      I have just realized that it's possible to open chat in another window. But it would be the mobile version of it. The link would look like http://networkname.ning.com/main/chat/mobileChat. Also, you can embed it on the page by using the iframe and HTML box module.

      Here is the simple iframe code to embed the chat on the page:

      <iframe width="640" height="560" src="http://networkname.ning.com/main/chat/mobileChat"></iframe>

      Also, it's necessary to add the following code to the custom CSS in the design studio to remove the menu from the mobile version of in the embedded frame.

      @media screen and (min-width:639px) {
      .cht-icon {
      display: none;
      }
      }

      Please note that a number of pixels in the code should be less than the iframe width otherwise the menu would be shown, and I think it shouldn't be more than 768px otherwise there is a chance that the menu won't be displayed on some devices.

      Maybe it's not the best solution, so I won't be removing the suggestion that I have already posted, but it seems to be the way around.

      This is how the chat looks on the page:

      3239700?profile=original

      • Thank you for this tip, Kos.  I've added a subtab with link to full view chat (using mobile link as you suggest).

        It works as a solution for now.

        Thank you,

        Holly
