Introducing the Ning 3.0 Language Editorhttps://creators.ning.com/announcements-from-ning/parlez-vous-pirate-introducing-the-ning-3-0-language-editor2013-11-22T00:32:04.000Z2013-11-22T00:32:04.000ZMonica Diazhttps://creators.ning.com/members/MonicaDiaz

Today, we're releasing the Language Editor to Ning 3.0 Networks. All of those custom strings you wanted to insert to make your network sound more like your own can now be added in! This also means that networks in need of a different language now have the tools needed to edit an existing language and make it their own.

Read on here, or feel free to visit the Help Center for an introduction to the Language Editor.

Create, Edit, Import and Export Translations

The language options that are available to edit by default made the most sense for the majority of Ning's population, but we'd hate to leave anyone behind in the dust. For that reason, with the Language Editor, you can import a translation file if you have one, or you can create a new translation based off of one of the default language options.

Important note: Please be aware that Ning 2.0 translation files cannot be imported into Ning 3.0 Networks.

What's great about creating a translation is that you can save it as its own separate language, and apply it to your network now or later. If you choose to apply it later, just go to your General Settings page and select it from the "Language" drop-down menu.

Another change we made is that you can now export your language from the dashboard directly, without having to know any special URLs to access the export list.

Clean Up

You'll also notice when you click to edit a language that there are fewer strings. Ning 3.0 has a smaller string set over all, and this was painstakingly picked through and cleaned up, in order to make your search for a string speedier and more useful. This will also make it easier to create a new translation. We've reduced the language string catalog from 82 to 30 pages!

Control

Still another change is that you can now use the Language Editor to edit not only text on your network, but also the welcome email. We have plans to build out a separate space where you can edit wording in messages that come from your network, so for now, the welcome email customizations just involve the ability to change the text in the email, not the numbers or links. Look for more awesomeness with message customizations later!

Crisis Aversion

Last of all, occasionally folks would accidentally break their language translations by editing strings in the giant PHP table that appeared in the last page of the Language Editor. We've removed this and ensured that all or your network's strings are available in the editable language boxes.

All of this is to say you can do a lot with the Language Editor.

Feedback

We love it and do our best to implement what we can based on votes, resources and feasibility. Take the Language Editor out for a spin and then let us know what you think!

Upgrading to Ning 3.0 Statushttps://creators.ning.com/announcements-from-ning/upgrading-to-ning-3-0-status2013-10-28T18:55:14.000Z2013-10-28T18:55:14.000ZJohn McDonaldhttps://creators.ning.com/members/JohnMcDonald

A quick update on Upgrading to Ning 3.0. The Ning Engineering Team has been hard at work for over 6 months building the upgrade process. They recently succeeded in upgrading small Ning 2.0 test networks. Now they are working to make the upgrade process more efficient and faster so you can upgrade larger networks. I know a number of you are eager to upgrade and start enjoying the flexibility of Ning 3.0. I apologize for the delay and will keep you posted on progress.

We're happy to start accepting requests for migration from Sandbox Group Members! All members were sent information for requesting migration of their networks. We are only opening requests to Sandbox Group Members at this stage to ensure that our team doesn't become overloaded with requests.

At this time, we'll be closing this thread to new Sandbox requests and memberships. Any already requested networks should be converted by the end of the day Tuesday, March 4th. If you think your network has not been converted properly, message Crystal and we'll look into it.

Update 12.30.13 - To prevent confusion and streamline discussions, this thread has been closed to new replies, but Ning 3.0 Sandbox Networks are still available. If you have feedback on Ning 3.0, please start a new discussion either in the Sandbox Group (here's a great template) or in the Ning 3.0 Feedback and Issues category.

Earlier today I appealed to all of you to start Ning 3.0 trials and give us feedback. Many of you have already posted valuable feedback – a big call-out to Joseph, SP and Alex for detailed lists! However, a number of you commented that a 14 day trial isn’t enough time to evaluate Ning 3.0. And if you invest time in designing a Ning 3.0 Network now, you might want the option to use that design later on when an upgrade process is released.

We agree. We will provide any Ning 2.0 Network Creator with one free Ning 3.0 Sandbox Network upon request. There is one catch: you need to provide us with feedback on Ning 3.0.

Here are the details.

Limited term: You will have the option to upgrade your free Ning 3.0 Sandbox Network to a paid Ning 3.0 subscription plan at any time.

5 member limit and no custom domains: A free Ning 3.0 Sandbox Network is meant to be a sandbox – for you and up to 4 admins to tinker around with design and features. Note, in the interest of giving you sandbox networks quickly, we haven’t built these limits into the product. So at the start, it will be an honor system.

Ning 2.0 Network Creators only: You must currently have an active Ning 2.0 subscription in good standing. The objective of this program is get feedback from existing customers before they have the option to upgrade.

How do you participate?

Join The Sandbox group on Creators (http://creators.ning.com/group/the-sandbox). Note, member moderation is turned on for the group, so please be patient while we approve your membership.

Create a new Ning 3.0 trial and post the trial URL in this discussion. The Ning Advocacy Team will change your trial subscription to our new free Sandbox Plan. Note, this may take us 2 to 3 days to process.

Post your initial evaluation of Ning 3.0 in the group forum within one week, if possible. Please include: a) bugs identified; b) improvements needed for the initial Ning 3.0 core features; c) Ning 3.0 changes you find are most valuable; and d) your prioritized list of new features we need to add to Ning 3.0.

As we release new features in Ning 3.0, we’ll ask you to provide additional input.

Thanks again for your help. Together we can design an awesome, next-generation platform for you to continue to cultivate and grow your communities!
