Current status of the Ning Platform is always available on the Ning Status Blog.

Today we're pleased to release a set of improvements to the Activity Feed feature on Ning 3.0 networks.

The updated Activity Feed allows members to view older items in the feed, and to view new items that have appeared since they loaded the page.

We've expanded the capabilities of Social Feeds so that you can have items automatically added to the Activity Feed via RSS and Twitter.

We've added a status feature, so that your members can leave status updates in the feed, and we've added link parsing for status updates, so that if a member adds a link, for example, to YouTube, the video is embedded and playable directly in the feed. Link parsing and embedding works with a wide variety of sites, including: YouTube, Dailymotion, Vine, Flickr video, Twitter, Soundcloud and Bandcamp. We'll also provide a preview of content for any link to a site that supports the OpenGraph standard.

With this release, members can also comment on status updates and individual photos directly in the feed.

In order to see and activate the new options that are available for the Activity Feed, head to the Activity Feed Settings page in the Social Site Manager.

      • I don't see an attribute where I can change the details that show up to 1000 is that on 3.0?

  • As of today, Ning has added the "New Items" button to our activity feeds again.

  • Nice work. Please finish all the updates on Ning 3.0 as soon as possible. I can't wait to upgrade my Ning site anymore.

  • Just tried to stick some soundcloud links in my activity feed, while they show up and play, after a while they totally break the site...

  • Don't know about you guys but I'm feeling a little bit like a guinea pig with ning 3.0 :(

    • Its obvious to me that this thing wasnt ready for release but they felt they had to because of the pressure they were under in july. This is the danger when people press them, we get beta releases which causes even more drama,

Mind you it makes for good bug testing, the only hope is that they are fixing it as we speak

      • Ning claims it was working on this activity feed update for almost FIVE MONTHS now.  How can it possibly have been released 'prematurely'?  In fact, it was intended simply as an update/fix to the activity feed they had already built for ning 3.0 a few months before that.  So add the total time periods that ning has supposedly been working on their 3.0 activity feed...and it's close to a year and a half now.

Now they release the new 'update' after all this time...and considering all its very obvious glitches that seem to be seriously messing up people's sites, it suggests that they had not even tested it much yet themselves.  Honestly, it's like it was hastily thrown together by one or two people in a couple of weeks, only in order to technically fulfill the July promise they had made to customers.  Lip service.  How does anyone know if they are even actually working on fixing their faulty coding for this 'update' ?

  • Glitches uberalles...anyone else? Loads of things just do not post to Activity Feed that are set to post...Comments on profiles, for example and if 2 discussions posted to a group only one is recorded in Feed. Ahhhhhhhhhhh fekkit, I have done enough whining for one day. Night all.

    • Yeah I'm not happy either Anam....its really looking bad on my site. I'm missing out on comments on photos etc. No group comments show now (when they did before the new activity feed). Seems I'll get a random one every so often but mostly my feed is boring and people just aren't coming back. Can't say I blame them. I've put a lot of work into this site and its disappointing. I want a refund!! ha!...well if things don't change soon I might get one...

  • In case anyone thinks I'm being a silly noodle about this lack of appearance of Comments on Group Comment Walls in the new Latest Activity feed, I have done a wee bit of random trawling. I clicked on 3 sites I am familiar with (all ning 2) who will have to migrate in the future and join us silly canaries in the coal mine (me, I mean, not you, of course). I attach their site statistics from a few RANDOM groups I clicked on. They were honestly random as you will see some do not support my case, (making me a very bad attorney). But I think from a quick perusal of these figures anyone can see how integral Comments on Group Walls are to the interaction on most sites and how their loss from Latest Activity Feed will affect the flow of site traffic and interaction unless this over-sight is remedied.

(I have not included site names or URLs here in case the owners would object)

Comments are calculated at 10 per page, as that is the general rule. I did not count the individual comments by my own self :)
