Update to Product Roadmap and Communication Changes

Thank you for your patience over the past several weeks. As you know, we closely follow and appreciate the feedback you share on Creators, and we’d like to make a couple of important announcements related to your posts.

First, regarding the product, the team has been working over the last several months on re-architecting and re-developing a new Activity Feed for Ning 3.0. The new Activity Feed will include the addition of statuses and more embeds based on pasting links into the status field. This isn’t everything that the team is working on but the most significant short term new capability. We are planning to release this feature in July.

We also wanted to address the downtime that some of you experienced on May 26th and 27th. After the scheduled maintenance on Monday to update a group of servers, we discovered that some of the backup servers were malfunctioning. We've corrected this and have changed our operating procedures to prevent this from happening again.

On the communication side, based on several factors including resources and priorities, we have made the decision that we will no longer be involved in providing day-to-day support and feedback through the Creators community. Communication from the Ning team needs to be focused on product capabilities and new releases and other general announcements such as this one. Our team is focusing on expanding some of the planned features that we already have in development. Once we have more information to share with you, we will do it here.

Please continue to use this community as a productive place to have conversations about how to build, grow, and manage Ning Networks. We will continue to provide technical support through tickets and phone. As always, phone support is available to those with networks on Pro, Performance and Ultimate plans. Our technical support team is available Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm PST.

  • This thread, started by Ning, is titled UPDATE TO ROADMAP AND COMMUNICATION CHANGES.

We got the 'communication changes' part, all right.

But where is the roadmap update, Ning??????  You have not updated your own roadmap for MONTHS now, and all of its information is completely outdated.  Pretty much worthless information at this point.

You keep directing us customers to look at your Roadmap page for current info on what you are working on currently and next in line to complete Ning's 3.0 unfinished platform...but you don't bother to put any current info there.  Do you really think this is ok?

Ning we are waiting for you to update your own product roadmap.

  • what I'm noticing is that when you add a url to the activity feed it only shows up if it is in the middle of the page not on a side bar?  is there anyway to fix that?

    • The feed shows up on my sidebars the same as it would on the main body of a page.

      • on mine when i put in a link it doesnt show up in my side bar at all it just shows the link and not the preview as it does when i have it in the bigger page module
        • That works for me as well, the preview appears on the sidebar feed. I have the excerpt length for the sidebar feed set at the lowest, 250. Do you have it set for something higher and perhaps that is the issue, not enough space for the length?

  • this shit is funny look at that last sentence this part in particular Please continue to use this community as a productive place to have conversations about how to build, grow, and manage Ning Networks.  WOW what is the freaking point when we call there are no answers and are referred to the product map that hasn't been updated since when?  I'm really getting sick and tired of having to work around a work around that should be implemented already with the new release is it really taking 2 years to finish a project I know they have the money and the technical know how to do this it seems like they are sitting there with there thumbs up there ass giving us bones to satisfy for the moment but not doing a damn thing dammit this is annoying.

    • Imagine if Ford ran a website so that its customers could get together and figure out between themselves how to get the cars to work. For example, some helpful users might give the dimensions needed so that others could cut their own windows from plexiglas while waiting for Ford to send them ones that they were promised a year ago. Others could reminisce about how Fords used to come with windows preinstalled.

In the meantime, the rest of the world would question why on earth Ford were selling new cars less functional than the ones they sold two years ago (even if they do go faster) and mock them for not at least selling the old ones so as not to lose brand loyalty and good will. As a result, potential customers looking to make a once-in-a-decade purchase go elsewhere, Ford get relegated to the minor league of car manufacturers and a few enthusiasts out there upload plexiglas window plans.
      • +1 Tim.

It just seems so wrong to me for customers to have to scramble around jerry-rigging custom coding and paying extra for 3rd party apps in order to have basic functions like video, search, photo slideshows or albums, chat, events, profile page customization, music player, even a decent activity feed and properly functioning notifications...  Jumping through hoops endlessly just to get stuff customers had automatically on their network years ago already, and now lack.  And yes I refuse to tinker with plans for making plexiglass substitute windows for my new car.  I actually DID buy a new car this past week, for real.  And surprise!-  it has windows.  Power windows!   And they work!

  • Thats it, I'm done! I have sent a message to Ning as I will no longer pay for a service that they don't provide. Thanks for wasting a year of potential business Ning.

    • Can't blame you.  And sad part is they don't care.
