Update to Product Roadmap and Communication Changes

Thank you for your patience over the past several weeks. As you know, we closely follow and appreciate the feedback you share on Creators, and we’d like to make a couple of important announcements related to your posts.

First, regarding the product, the team has been working over the last several months on re-architecting and re-developing a new Activity Feed for Ning 3.0. The new Activity Feed will include the addition of statuses and more embeds based on pasting links into the status field. This isn’t everything that the team is working on but the most significant short term new capability. We are planning to release this feature in July.

We also wanted to address the downtime that some of you experienced on May 26th and 27th. After the scheduled maintenance on Monday to update a group of servers, we discovered that some of the backup servers were malfunctioning. We've corrected this and have changed our operating procedures to prevent this from happening again.

On the communication side, based on several factors including resources and priorities, we have made the decision that we will no longer be involved in providing day-to-day support and feedback through the Creators community. Communication from the Ning team needs to be focused on product capabilities and new releases and other general announcements such as this one. Our team is focusing on expanding some of the planned features that we already have in development. Once we have more information to share with you, we will do it here.

Please continue to use this community as a productive place to have conversations about how to build, grow, and manage Ning Networks. We will continue to provide technical support through tickets and phone. As always, phone support is available to those with networks on Pro, Performance and Ultimate plans. Our technical support team is available Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm PST.

            • Curtis, there have been one or two so far who have gone live- but it's up to them if they want to show their JR sites here.  Ken here may be one if he steps forward.

Soaring Eagle's site is almost ready to go live and he may choose to show it here. Of course, it looks uniquely his own style.

There are some other familiar faces from here on Creators who are experimenting on the JR site as well.

I have been testing my JR site and am right now doing a second test import of my Ning Archive. But I'm not 'live' yet, and I still want to test SocialEnginePHP.   Yes, Ning Archive uploads/imports can take days (!).

Modules and layouts are all up to you and the JR software is still being tweaked to suit Ningsters ..each week some new improvements from the JR Team.  It's not what I consider perfect just yet but I can see that just about anything is possible on it.  It does tax my brain figuring out how to tweak this or that, for sure.  But I'm making slow progress for a couple months now, and I'm still determined and optimistic.  :)

I still won't be ready to 'go live' for a while yet, but maybe in a couple more weeks I can at least show a screenshot of my JR home page.  It's nice and fresh and clean as compared to my Ning 2.0, I must say.  I don;t have my modules laid out yet properly or functioning exactly right yet...but it looks very promising.  And it'll be exactly what I want in terms of a real social networking community instead of a glorified overpriced half-baked brand-pushing blogging platform...lol.  I estimate it may cost me a bit more than my current Ning- but almost all of that will be for server fees...and maybe a 3rd party chat cost.  Everything else is THERE already in the initial cheap platform/modules JR purchase.

              • Thank you- I agree with everything you have said-I have discovered the same. I did look at Social engine just the demo site and I think the JAMROOM offers much more but will take more time.

I like the idea of OWNING everything and having html5 videos on MY site using MY server.

          • You want my honest answer....It looks too complicated for me. i would have to hire someone  to help me and i cannot afford it.

            • It does look complicated right now ..because they are developing/customizing/creating more simple drag/drop design tools and ning-like features as we speak.  As we've been saying over and over.

The JR team enthusiastically develops more requested stuff for us in one afternoon than Ning does in 6 months.

  • I came back hoping to see that everything was moving right along and that the site was updated damn I was wrong so sad all that time effort just to start all over from scratch building a community THANKS A LOT NING FOR WASTING MY TIME AND MONEY.......................

  • From what I understand from calling mode media New York ning has no plans of going anywhere. From what I understand mode media is a worldwide advertising conglomerate that has a lot of subsidiaries in many different countries. By having so many subsidiaries in so many place I can definitely tell that ning is not a top priority at this point.
What mode media needs to understand is that every network creator is the creator of the individual station of viewers that mode media needs in order to keep the money rolling in on a level that no television station has ever seen.
That is how I have created YOMOWOMO.com to operate. Giving the consumer the design capability to design mini videos of the things one wants to watch at the time one wants to watch it with alerts of the things one has to do to complete all of the daily activities in each and every individuals own personal day 24 hours a day 365 days a year.
Network creators have content and the viewers on very specific platforms that can easily be turned into billion dollar ad platforms that people carry with them everywhere one goes waiting for more information to be alerted about on the consumers own terms.
Gerald price, of YOMOWOMO.com understands what's going on but mode media you need to understand that consumers are the ones that consumes information about the products and/or services that advertisers are looking for the best place to place their advertisements and network creators are bringing in their own unique groups of consumers their own way which keeps viewers attention and the viewer wanting more. Ning you have created the ball and the ball is in your court now what are you going to do???????
    • Gerald, while i understand what you are saying and it is certainly applicable to a certain type of social media platform (Ning or otherwise), there are many of us Network creators who are not in the least bit interested in financial return or 'billion dollar platforms'. Many of us are hobbyists or at least interested in sharing in a community way with members on a certain common area of interest, purely from an altruistic or non-economic point of view. this, in my opinion, is the beauty of platforms facilitated by Ning (or others). It is not all about monetising ones site...we as NCs might choose to invest in monthly payments to maintain a free and open-source forum with no intention of ever receiving anything financial in return. This kind of gels with the idea of the original philosophy behind the Net..a libertarian, open-source, user-content-driven, free and creative and freaky space for beings to share. :) I hope Ning continues to enable this.

      • Anam, about money, that is a long discussion in and of itself. It would be nice to say that Ning is not in it to make the money because if that was the case ning would charge zero for their monthly service fee and everyone would be happy. You pay a fee and that is where we are at. From that point on the platform content is all yours to do as you may.
Monetizing with choice is what I am referring to. By Ning having a platform where those network creators who wants to monetize their platforms can do so which will give Ning the revenue to satisfy their share holders.
Anam I am going to give you an example how YOMOWOMO.com works, every person on planet have daily activities that have to take in order to fulfill ones personal day. And it takes products and/or services to fulfill those daily activities. No matter how large or small those products and/or services may be. Now at YOMOWOMO.com the consumer creates a ad platform that is a reminder to oneself that one has something that has to be done at that time. Now Ning will put together a list of advertisers that can supply the products and/or services that one is going to use at the time scheduled by oneself and the creation of the ad platform is how the consumer is compensated plus one is getting a list of the best products and/or services one is going to use at the time scheduled no matter what.
Anam, people go to forums to improve upon their daily lives and money is the fuel that runs the economic engine we use everyday, rent food mortgages cars trucks movies dinner out etc.
YOMOWOMO.com is taking the things everyone has to do everyday anyway and making it better.

TO GOD BE THE GLORY IN EVERYTHING THAT WE DO

SINCE I have talk to corporate ning is not going anywhere, I am going to continue to write until I get the full attention of Ning because at this point Ning is the best platform out here for network creators wanting the freedom create their own content that can be 100% personal. The canvas is here we just need more open communication from the canvas creator Ning.com
  • I am unsure how this happened but NING Support answered my question about canceling my network as of Dec. 31, 2014 and explained to me very thoroughly and professionally how to go about it.  I did not submit a support ticket but rather this question was sent to me as a "question on creators."  I am glad to see NING is watching out for questions on here.  At least some questions anyway.  They answered it via support.  The whole scenario of decisons just makes me sad.  :(

    • Donna, that makes me think maybe there is at least one Ning employee who is trying to look out for us, just even a little bit here on Creators.

      Yeah, it's sad, and frustrating.
