I have been approached by an international media company to buy my Ning Network. I doubt they know I created it on Ning.

My question is this, can my network be moved off the Ning platform to another, one that would not be on a 3rd partly platform??

Just my opinion, but I think it's a real smart idea to have ownership, control, and server access over your site yourself, especially if the site is of any career/business value or if it contains irreplaceable content.

If you have a ning 2.0 site then almost all your content can be moved onto a couple other platforms- most notably to JamRoom and SocialEnginePHP.  If you have a 3.0 ning site then you can minimally move at least your members and their profiles, by utilizing the member .csv datafile.

For example I've seen many former Ning creators successfully move onto Jamroom, where they are thriving today. More info on those options including using migration services (where they actually create the archive and perform the migration service for you) can be found here and here.  Their hosted plan seems to be a particularly good deal. It manages and updates the SSD server for you but you have complete access to all your content and to your server.

Social Enginephp is pretty robust too but is substantially more expensive. WordPress is great too as everyone knows, but it won't import nearly as much of your content.  Hope this helps you.

  • I agree George,

When it comes to actual livelihood and business professionalism, I need stability and up to date features.  I want to be able to access/backup/customize and control my site content.

Existing on 3rd party platforms might be fine for vanity/hobby sites, but platforms that get sold off to 'whoever' with no notice are just not reliable compared to running your own site on software platform you own, and having that all-important access to your content on your server.  Quick reliable support is also essential for a professional site rather than outsourcing or part timers.

To be frank, have not seen substantial results since Glam Mode went belly up without warning last Sept six months ago. Lots of talk and spin but...
It's worrisome.  JMHO but feels like throwing good money after bad.

  • Got to say I concur with this, sadly.

  • At one point I was going to move over to WP with the Buddypress plug-in. After looking hard at buddypress it seemed that their support went missing a few years back. I could be wrong about that. Buddypress seems to be the best option if you can make it work.
