ive been sitting there faffing around all day trying to get this Google Authorship to work. And i have finally had some success.

hopefully soon (within weeks) i should see my little google+ face next to some of my blog posts i have created on my site! :D and so will others. It is a bit of a vanity thing i think really, but its cool and i like this kind of stuff. If you want a presence online then having your face next to content on google is awesome, and if you can blog on your ning site and people see your face next to your blog then even better.

For anyone that doesnt know what I am going on about then see this link on Google Authorship

If you want to do this too, then just follow these steps. Make sure you do this exactly as i have said below. I will come back and reply if anyone else has difficulty.

Step 1. Create a Google+ profile. your gonna need one of these.

Step 2. Find out your id, or create a customisable URL instead. (both are the same thing)

Step 3. goto your ning network and edit your profile. http://yourningnetwork.com/profiles/settings/editProfileInfo

you need to add the following code into a text box on one of your profile questions.

<a href="https://plus.google.com/+YourGoogleProfileNumberOrID" rel="me">My Google+ Profile

Make sure you have the rel="me", without going into detail.. this basically tells google this is your profile.

Step 4. Grab your ning profile link. You can simply just go to this link http://your domain.com/profiles and it will take you to your profile page.

example: http://YourDomain.com/profile/YourUserName

Grab this and place it in your "contributor to" section of your Google+ profile, make sure this too is a public link. You can add a label (basically anchor text) and the url.

Step 5. Make sure your name on your Google+ profile is the same as on your ning network!

If it isnt then you need to change your ning full name field to the same as your Google+.

You can add nicknames or "other names" on google+ but i havnt tested this with the authorship.

Step 6. getting there! keep going... Next step is to ensure you have an email address for your ning network something@yourdomain.com I had almost given up finding a solution for this, which there is basically no information on then i stumbled across something!

http://ningnames.com/help-center/faq-email-forwarding.aspx

(if you dont use ning names then look for email forwarding on your hosting area)

You need to follow exactly what this says. I basically made my email exactly the same as my gmail, but i dont think is neccessary as long as you can confirm anyemailaddress@YourDomain.com you should be fine.

I just filled in the bottom box which says, basically forward everything to this email address (i made this my gmail address). this also means if someone replies to a no-reply email you send then you will receive it too. cool!

Step 7. Then you need to goto this page from google so you can verify your domain email address, so click the link and type in YourName@YourDomain.com, you should then get an email to your personal account (as ning names now forwards any email to this account) and you can verify this link. Nice!

This will add an email address to your 'work' contact area of your google+ account.

The final thing i hadnt done was realise that i needed to make this email address a publicly available address so that the google bots could find it when i ran the check. The test was coming back as negative even though there was a valid email there until i did this. I just saved you literally 3 hours of faffing around there.

To change this necessary setting just goto your google+ profile>about and edit the contact information. You have to make this work email Public. It will be on Your Circles by default i think.

Final Step! If you then run the test, by going to this page and typing in a blog post url you have written, you will be able to see probably a failed test at this stage.

http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/richsnippets

Then.. you can type in your google+ url into the box below. I have screenshot this box, and it should show you whether there is a connection there or not.

Fingers crossed i have done enough to start seeing my face on google search results for future posts. Maybe i am missing a step? I will soon find out.

I hope this has made sense. Believe me it gets complicated in your mind if you think too much about it.

Any questions? I will attempt to answer over this weekend.

Good luck. (you may need it to make sense of my post :D)

As you know Ning 3.0 doesn't have search bar like ning 2.0 yet. May be some people are desperately looking for a solution. So today I'm gonna show you few simple steps to add google custom search bar to your ning 3.0 network (Ning 2.0 has search bar at the top right corner within ning bar) and it works as good as default ning 2.0 search bar. So here we go.

Step one: Click on this lick http://www.google.com/cse/manage/all and sign in to your Google or Gmail account, or create one if you don’t already have one. Once you’ve done that, head over to the Google Custom Search management page. Click on ADD button> Enter your network link under "Sites to search" and hit CREATE button> now go to step two.

Step Two: Copy and paste the following code into notepad. Go back to the google page you just created google custom search bar code and Click on GET CODE and copy the code. Now go back to the notepad and paste the google custom search bar code within
and
.

Step Three: Now copy and paste the entire code into custom code (End of Page Code) and save the page. You are done.

That being said I'm certain there are different opinions on what can damage your SEO but this video by a Google webmaster seems legit.

In it, he outlines how external RSS feeds (such as RSS feed widgets from RSSinclude, RSSpump, yahoo pipes, etc.) as well as copied content from other sites damage your ranking in Google.............even flag pages with these as malicious or SPAM.

Note: My guess is this is the reason Ning wasn't going to bring back external RSS feeds in 3.0 (even though many of us begged them to do so and they are reconsidering it). Still, if you have members copying external articles as I do (it seems over 40% copied in an article triggers a flag), it's hurting your SEO.........so for 2014 it seems obviously we need realign our thought process and focus on boosting your original content.

Hold on, wait a minute. Does this also mean that Ning sites which use/embed RebelMouse and ScoopIt that pipe in external news are harming their SEO as well? I don't know on this but it makes sense and given Rebelmouse's popularity among NC's, I thought I better bring it up for discussion. Being that the video is from a Google Webmaster, I would tend to believe it.

Additionally I came across this article from Search Engine Land which absolutely rips apart the use of sliders and carousels for a number of reasons. While everyone is entitled to their opinion and I'm certain there are those who would disagree, (for me) numbers speak louder than words and the bottom line from this B2B poll was that service promotion are clicked far, far more - not the carousel.

Oh I almost forgot. I totally enjoyed this video on Panda and Penguin. So much so I watched it four times to absorb just "what" Google's algorithms are up to nowadays and "what" criteria is hurting SEO results. I recommend a cup of coffee and a note pad. Worth the 20 minutes.

What else folks? Do you believe any of this? Is it bunk? What else can be done to boost one's SEO? I know SoaringEagle has been all over his SEO since the release of Penguin and Panda in these discussions here and here. (I bet there are more) Hopefully he can jump in here and lend us his insights in addition to Jen, JF, SP, George, Patrick and ALL of you other experienced NCs. What say you?

The best way to add a Google Font to a Ning 3.0 site, is to use the code provided by Google fonts. If we could upload files to a root directory, there would be a better way for load times. However, I'm finding that using this method on Ning 3.0 is quite successful.

What not to do:

Don't apply a Google font to the entire site. Only apply to sections like your Menu Navigation or Header Titles. If your font(s) are not too large, you can apply to both.

Don't add more than 2 fonts to your Google Font code, in order to keep the font file reasonably small. The Google Font site will show you the load time for your font file.

Instructions:

Go to http://www.google.com/fonts/

Find a font you like, click on: "Add to Collection".

In bottom right next to your Collection font(s), click on "Use".

Read over this page, good to know what you're doing. Once you feel comfortable to move forward,

Locate #3. Add this code to your website:

Select the first Tab "Standard".

Copy your font code, and get ready to paste it into your Ning 3.0 site.

From your Ning site, access the Ning 3.0 Toolbar, and click on first icon: Social Site Manager

Click on link "Custom Code"

Inside the top Box labeled: "
Code", paste your Google Font code into this box.

Example font code: "<link href='http://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Kite+One' rel='stylesheet' type='text/css'>"

Save.

Now, let's use our new font.

Go to Toolbar, and click on Design Studio icon (2nd icon in toolbar).

Click on Custom CSS.

To add your new Google Font to your H3 (Headers), use the following CSS as your example. Tips: (a) You will probably need to set the font size. (b) Be sure you use backup fonts, called a font stack. In the example I am using Arial and sans-serif, in case the Google Font doesn't load. (c) I find that a font weight is the cleanest look:

h3 {
font-family: 'Kite One', Arial, sans-serif; /* The first font should be copied from Google Fonts under usage, see 4. Integrate the fonts into your CSS */
font-weight:600!important;
font-size:22px!important; }

To add your new Google Font to your Menu Navigation, use the following CSS as your example. Same as above, use a font stack and check the font size.

.navbar ul li a {
font-family: 'Kite One', Arial, sans-serif;
font-weight:600!important;
letter-spacing: 0.02em; /* You can add spacing between letters, sometimes needed */
font-size:18px; }

SAVE your CSS.

Test in all browsers, and across devices.

Good luck and have fun!

I know to most people here on NING Creators, this is an easy task to do. But after digging, and digging through the NC help/tip archives, I found it difficult to find what I was looking for, so I am creating this page to help clarify it for the rest of us "newbs."

To remove the Social Share and Like buttons, do the following:

1. From your Custom Page, click the "Option" button in the top right corner, and then select "edit"

2. Scroll to the bottom of the page and put a Check Mark in the option that says:
Meta: Manage title and meta tags manually (advanced)

3. Insert the following code into the box that says "Custom"

4. Click "Update page"

This will remove ALL the current Social Share and LIKE icons from this specific page, but NOT any of your other pages.

Wow, i have been totally immersed in Google+ for the past few days, hence my absence from here (and my own network). Google has hit a total home run (finally) with an effort in social networking. I'm going to do my best to make this post as sensible as I can, but there is so much to talk about. This G+ is already amazing, and will only get better.

What is Google+?

Google + (plus) is, put simply, Google's answer to Facebook and Twitter. It is the best of BOTH worlds, combined with the power of awesome Google tools like +1, Google Docs, Google Calendars, Reader, YouTube, Google Search, and much more. All of the tools are already integrated, making using them and collaborating on them thru G+ seamless. G+ is making all of Google's own tools that have been around for a while much more relevant. Many of these tools go largely unnoticed by a large part of the internet, but it won't be for long. Let me tell you how some of this works, that can benefit your network.

Circles are alot like Twitter, in that you can follow people, and people can follow you. When you come what i call "full circle" with an individual, meaning you and someone else have one another in a circle, you are doing the same as following each other on Twitter. So, when you do this with people in your niche (my network's niche is NASCAR), anything you post will show in their stream for the circle they added you into (hopefully, in my case, for their benefit, it's NASCAR.), as theirs will mine. So, when I link content from my NASCAR network, it will show on THEIR (hopefully) NASCAR stream. They can then visit your site, +1 the post, share it with all of their friends in THEIR (hopefully NASCAR) stream, so on and so forth. After you build up a nice sized following, you don't have to continue to follow others, but I recommend it in early stages to maximize your chance of getting followed or staying followed.

So, how do i find people on G+ who are interested in my niche?

Glad you asked! very easily! Just go to my Google Plus Search Engine and simply search for anything you want to find! This will pull up everything on G+ related to your search keyword(s), including who posted it. Simply go add people from that search to the circle you created for your niche, and voila! Do this while it is on the ground floor, too, because people are adding people left and right. it's already crazy. Once it is open to the public, the more followers you have, the more you will stand out in that niche, and my prediction is your followers in the niche will EXPLODE. I venture to guess G+ will shatter the record of the social network with the shortest time to 100 million members. Quote me on that, people, I think it will be THAT big.

Google+ search is powered by, you guessed it, Google Search!

Ya think they are crawling it with priority? you BET they are! This tells me it can only HELP your SEO on Google Search, meaning, the more you post links from your network, the better.

Can I make a G+ for my network?

Not yet, i don't think, but soon. it is still in beta. I read that accounts that were not individuals but business names were removed, and it will be added soon (like facebook fanpages). It is not yet clear in my circles if this is something they may charge for, but you don't really NEED it. Use CIRCLES, find people in your niche as described above.

Folks, there are many ways I haven't mentioned that can help, too, you can even point a custom URL at your page. I have just purchased both http://davenorrisplus.com (which is already pointed at my G+ profile page) and http://nascarnationplus.com (for my G+ fanpage, if it's free, or inexpensive) for less than $18 from Go Daddy, with a 30% off .com sale code I'd JUST gotten! Can this get any better? LOL! learn more on this youtube search for Google+ Project, and watch the videos with your network in mind. The hangouts are wicked cool, as are Sparks (I want to know how to get my content into sparks!), and there is much more.

Those of you who already follow me on G+ that i have in my Creators+ circle, that got here from G+......neat, huh? That is a great example of EXACTLY what I'm getting at with this entire post!

I hope everyone finds this useful and informative, and helps you expand your thoughts on how this can REALLY help your networks! Feel free to add me to your Creators Circle (or whichever you want, i think it'd be great if a bunch of us made a huge Creators circle-some of us are already full circle in one) you can find me at http://davenorrisplus.com

Happy plussing!

Now I am going to show you a trick that takes only a few minutes and in the end you'll have a Google Chrome Web App of your Ning network and can submit it to the Chrome Web Store for your members to download and use. Here is a look at the finished product as seen in the Google Chrome Browser (along with a custom theme I made for my network for land surveyors, which may become a future how-to post):

What the heck is a Chrome Web App?

You can create application shortcuts to websites that you regularly visit, as well as apps that you've installed from the Chrome Web Store. These shortcuts can be placed on your computer desktop and menus for quick and easy access.

What is required to make a CWA?

A Chrome Web App requires two components, the Manifest and an Icon.

The Manifest is a JSON file with the namemanifest.json

The Icon is a 128px x 128px image that will be used on the New Tab page.

To create the Manifest, copy the following into a text editor like Notepad or TextEdit:

{
"name": "Your-Network-Name",
"description": "Your Description of Your Network",
"version": "1.0",
"icons": {
"128": "128.png"
},
"app": {
"urls": [
"http://www.yournetwork.ning.com/"
],
"launch": {
"web_url": "http://www.yournetwork.ning.com/"
}
},
"permissions": [
"unlimitedStorage",
"notifications"
]
}

You will need to make the appropriate changes (replace text and urls with red line beside them with your own) to the areas indicated below (name, description, urls, and launch):

Once this is done, save the file as manifest.json (NOT manifest.json.txt!!!)

Next, you need to have created an icon for your web app. You can use any graphics application such as photoshop or GIMP or web app that allows you to save it as a 128×128 png file. Save the file with the name 128.png.

NOW...Create a new folder somewhere on your computer and give it a name (connecting the words in the name with either an _ or - for example: Your_Network )and give it the name that you will call your Web app and place both the manifest and icon files inside the folder.

Now it’s time to install the Web App into Chrome.

1. Open Google Chrome.

2. Click the wrench in the upper-right corner of the application.

3. Click Tools and select Extensions.

4. On the right side of the Extensions page, click the + that is next to Developer mode.

5. Click the Load unpacked extension button.

6. Browse to the Web App’s folder and click OK.

BOOM!! Your web app should now be created for your network, any errors are likely a manifest typo. Go back and check the manifest for any missed character(or an unnecessary ones).

Now when you click on the New Tab page in Chrome Browser, your new web app will appear with the others as shown above.

Whew..this post got long....i will create a follow up post soon to show you how to submit it to the Chrome Web store and share with your members. If you've been looking for a way to map your members on the ning platform but have been pulling your hair out waiting on members to ADD THEMSELVES to the member map application,
this is the work around for you. You can find the finished product on the front page (and every page) of Land Surveyors United as well as the Surveyors Member Map Page.

Keep These Things in Mind:

The only way this will work is if you have a question in your profile questions which asks for exact location, geodetic coordinates or similar.

This will have to be reprocessed in the following fashion EVERYTIME you want to update your map

This will only work as a top level admin or NC

Its best to have a Gmail or Google Account to complete this tutorial, so get one if you do not have already.

In a follow up post I will show you how to give your members custom icons..

Step One: Export your member data from the member moderation page in dashboard

Step Two: Import that .CSV file to Google Docs- make sure that ALL COLUMNS HAVE DATA IN THEM because if you have too many empty cells in the spreadsheet, it will not process in the next step.

Step Three: Head over to Mapalist.com and set up an account using the same Google/Google Docs account used in step 2. Create a map and when prompted, choose the spreadsheet that you used in step 2. Follow all of the instructions on Mapalist.com in order to convert the spreadsheet into a map with geolocations.

Step Four: View/Manage the map you just made-grab the embed code and add it to a page on your network. (See figure 1)

Step Five: Download the KML file which is at the bottom of the generated map, meant for Google Earth.

Step Six: Go to Google Maps while still logged into your google account and Create a Map which will be added to your "My Maps" section. Now Import that KML file from step Five into that map which you've just started and named.

Step Seven: You now have all of your members plotted on a google map, now look on the right hand side of the map and click "Link to This"-under it you will see customize this embed code. A new screen will open. Choose the correct size that you would like for your map to be and the embed code will be generated for you to embed in your network. (see figure 2)

Now look at what you just made....aren't you a genius!

It took special coding with new page for results, and several jumping through hoops.

NOW, Google offers an easy way to add a custom Google Search to your Ning Network.

Go here:
http://www.google.com/cse/

Click on "Create a Custom Search Engine"

Next to: "What do you want to search?" Select - - Only sites I select.

Under "Sites to search:" enter your Ning Network URL. If you want to search more than one site, enter 1 URL per line.

Agree to Google Terms.

Click on Next.

Click on Finish.

Now you'll be taken to a page with this header: "Search engines I've created"

Click on "Control Panel" next to your new Search Engine.

Look in left column. You will see a link: "Get code"

Copy/paste "Custom Search element code" to a text box on your Ning site.

If you want to see an example of how this works, see the Google Custom Search in right column of Creators (above videos).
This answer is buried within a forum/discussion. I wanted to add it as tutorial, so it's easier to locate.
Here's how the # of visits for TuDiabetes looks like for October and November 2009:

In the screenshot from Google Analytics, you can see the dips we normally see on weekends and the big deep that hurts us all so much to see due to Thanksgiving (though it's good to stop and be thankful!)I also thought I'd point out the kind of behavior we've seen in the past associated with peaks tied to events. We organized an event that we promoted heavily in and outside the network. As a result, we saw a spike in traffic. The days following the peak have a higher traffic level than before the peak, but the interesting lesson is that the traffic level hardly ever is the same as the peak: i.e. the peak raises the "average" traffic level (as a result of more visitors/new and/or recurring) but it is still a spike.So, do not expect your traffic levels resulting from high traffic events (you get mentioned on some very important blog or on TV, etc.) to be sustained at the level of the peak. However, do work hard to make sure continuing to develop your community to make sure you retain those new people that join your network (or revisit your network) in connection with the spike.So, what lessons have you learned from your Analytics?
