Hello all!

NEW FEATURE from Ning, wooo hoooooo!

I wanted to see what would happen if I put a style tag in the new Member Customizable HTML Boxes for Profile Pages and I found that if I add it with line breaks it does not work, but if I run it all on the same line, IT WORKS!

I added this, in HTML Editor mode:

<style type="text/css">.photoListPage { background-color: blue; }#MC_Title { background-color: #EEE; color: #444; font-size: 200%; padding: 0.5em; margin: 0.5em auto; }</style>
<div id="MC_Wrapper">
<div id="MC_Title">Member Customizable Box</div>
<div id="MC_Body">body area here...</div>
</div>

to my Member Customizable HTML Box (MC Box for short) and got this:

As you can see, I was able to style not only elements INSIDE the MC Box but also the background of the Photos module which is outside of the box.

I first tried it with normal formatting; one style rule per line, but that did NOT work:

<style type="text/css">
.photoListPage { background-color: blue; }
#MC_Title { background-color: #EEE; color: #444; font-size: 200%; padding: 0.5em; margin: 0.5em auto; }
</style>
<div id="MC_Wrapper">
<div id="MC_Title">Member Customizable Box</div>
<div id="MC_Body">body area here...</div>
</div>

So try this yourself if you want, but remember to put the style code all on one line (which the editor will wrap).

Best wishes!

TJ

  • Good job TJ.  So nice to see a new suggestion posted instead of errors and complaints.  Just praying this continues.  Have a great weekend!

    • Thanks!

      I hope you have a great weekend too!  I am inland in the Carolinas so I am seeing lots of rain and wind outside my office window at the moment, but nothing bad.  My thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected.

      I think Ning may finally come out with the API for Ning 3 soon, which will be a help for developers, like me, who want to add even more functionality to Ning.  I have been busy over the last 3 years adding in features Ning left out of 3.0, like Search for private sites, expanded Likes abilities, etc. AND backing up Ning 3 sites so people can have control over their own data!  Ning originally said the backup ability for Ning 3 sites would be based on the API so if that comes out, then the backup should be next.

      • Backing up a 3.0 would be such a relief.  I get the heebee jeebies every time the site goes down.  A backup would ease those fears greatly.

      • This is great to know TJ. I'm using it for my CSS but remember just like Ning 2.0 only administrators and creators can add CSS to the text box. You might want to add that information to your tip. :) You have a great day. :)

        • Thanks George, I just got to test it on my site, signed in as a regular member, and the CSS doesn't work.  So yes, looks like this tip is just for Admin, which isn't that helpful :P  An admin could put CSS in the Design Studio or Custom Code box.

    nice tip TJ!
