A QR Code
A QR Code (Quick response) allow you to display an URL readable by a mobile phone. Using Google Maps and Goo.gl URL Shortener, I am going to show you how to inset a QR code into your ning in the correct way.
A Practical Example.
Check out Land Surveyors United Member Map on Google Maps, which generates this LOOOOONG URL:
Now Plug that long URL into Goo.gl URL shorter and we get this:
The QR Code Again
We just add .qr to the shorten URL, to get the URL of the QR Code :
To display the QR Code, we just use an img tag :
<img src="http://goo.gl/jz6BV .qr" style="border: 1px solid #000; padding: 5px;" alt="QR code - Google Maps - LSU Member Map" title="QR code - Google Maps - LSU Member Map" />
Plug this into the HTML of a text box and we get this:

Hello all,
While reading off my Mashable feed I came across this article. Apparently QR codes can be beautiful and more. Colors, inserting logos and other art is possible!
Cool,
James
are any other Ning Creators making use of QR codes these days? should be very helpful especially in 3.0 as it will always lead to a mobile optimized page..
If you'd like to see some of my latest work with the ning 3.0 platform and a few other custom solutions that I haven't shared on Creators Forum check this out..
lets be clear about this, this only makes sense for items which are being printed or for offline use... if it is something on your site, make it a link.. even worse, an increasing amount of people are using mobile devices to view our sites now, so to scan the qr code you use a mobile device, if you are looking at the site on your mobile device.. how does one scan said qr code... so it is indeed a powerful tool, but please use it correctly.. google Scott Stratten for more on the dangers of incorrectly using qr codes!
glad you mentioned this, which is actually why I am back revisiting this post tonight, to update it for the 3.0.. welcome to my 2.0 world but I have been spending time on 3.0 planning
did you see the post date on this post? it was in 2011
and since you brought it up, i have to admit that members on my network do just that (ie either print the page to take into field or load it on their phone to take to field). But you are correct. Not all communities are built around support, obviously, but many are. Back in 2011 when i posted this I was working with clients who wanted it on their site... With the responsive 3.0 framework, QR code usage will be much more justified. I used to redirect to mobile version of pages... When i roll out the update on this post I will mention your comment as in support of what I plan to revise.. thanks Chris..I am inspired to collect more opinions and mentions of this subject
oh yeah if you are looking at the site on your mobile device.. how does one scan said qr code...
Using media queries you can specify in the CSS to only show the code <div> on viewports larger than 720px
Great tip!
