To any other developers who use the custom code / analytics textbox to enter javascript or other mods for their sites, or client's sites...

I was asked to make a mod for a site.  I wrote and tested some jQuery code.  It seemed to work fine.  But it was reported that it didn't work on the mobile version of the site.

I went to the mobile version of the site and did a "view Source".  I saw that nothing from the Custom Code box was there, including my code.

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

My preliminary research leads me to believe that Ning isn't loading the Custom Code box on Mobile sites.  We should take that into account as we write apps in the future.  It may save time and effort if we ask a potential client if they have a problem if our mods do not work on the mobile version of their site.

Not a complaint or a bug or much of an issue really.  Just wondering if what I found is true, and offering a heads up for others.

Best wishes!

  • That is correct. The mobile version doesn't offer a way to use custom code or custom CSS. It's a very standardized (and very reliable) experience. I don't think there are plans to change this.
    • Thanks for that info, Eric!

I understand why it is the way it is, makes sense.  Now that I know this is the case, I can educate my clients as to what can and can't be done from the mobile version of our sites.

      Best wishes!

  • TJ if this is not possible then the desktop version will have to do. Email me or mail me on here.

Also is there anyway to add a users profile to the mobile version? So they can edit etc?

    • Hi Josh,

      I'll email you, thanks!

As for the mobile profile page, if its not there already, I can't add it, but maybe Ning will decide to put it in there.

      Best wishes!

TJ, I may have just found a way, just need to make sure it doesn't cause any issues. I wanted to change the color of the mobile links on a 2.0 site. The CSS (as we know) would not work in Advanced CSS or Custom Code box. I added a style tag to the Mobile/Analytics, and it loaded!

    • Thank you JEN!!!!! :D I'm going to definitely try this!! :)

    • Great news, Jen! Glad to hear you found a solution to this issue!
