Ning 3.0 FAQs

What is Ning 3.0?

Ning 3.0 is one the largest projects ever undertaken at Ning: the re-imagining of our product.  With Ning 3.0, today’s social leader can create a place where they own and control everything, a place to communicate and engage with their most loyal fans or customers when they want and how they want---on the largest, most scalable, and most integrated social platform of its kind.

Ning 3.0 delivers a step-change in publishing capabilities, site flexibility and design customization for existing and new customers.  Want to see more?  Test out a Ning 3.0 Network today!  Check out our Ning 3.0 Help Center here for more in-depth information about the new Ning 3.0 features.

Why did you redesign Ning?

The needs of our customers have changed.  We redesigned Ning to address the needs of social leaders who’ve built successful online communities on Ning and major social channels such as Facebook and Twitter.  These social leaders need to both share content with their fans and foster engagement within the community.  They need flexible ways to interweave content they publish with community-generated content.  They need to aggregate all of their activities across social platforms in one place.  And they have higher standards for design so they can protect and build their brand on the web.  Ning 3.0 addresses all of these needs in new and powerful ways.

We also heard clearly from Network Creators that Ning needed a makeover.  Sites created on Ning 2.0 often look outdated and Network Creators needed CSS skills to create exciting designs.  With Ning 3.0, truly anyone will be able to create a unique, beautifully-designed home for his or her online community.  We also completely redesigned the HTML of all user-facing pages to make the platform much friendlier for expert designers.

What's changed with Ning 3.0?

We've made a lot of refinements to the Ning features you've come to know over the years. Some of the biggest changes you'll notice are:

  • A redesigned Blog feature
  • Much greater page and layout flexibility, including the ability to create multiple instances of each feature
  • Granular controls for privacy, contributors and moderation for each page and instance of a feature
  • A simpler, yet more powerful Design Studio
  • An updated, logical 960pixel 16 column HTML grid for expert designers
  • A more contemporary, clean look to all features
  • Responsive design so your content and navigation automatically adjust to smartphones and tablets
  • A new, simpler way to pull in a YouTube or Vimeo channel

We're also offering new plans and pricing for Ning 3.0. We want everyone to succeed, so the new plans all include the same core features. The plans for Ning 3.0 also follow an activity-based model. Customers pay based on community size (membership and admins), with higher priced plans including higher levels of support. Aligning pricing with success in this way allows everyone to start small and scale up (and pay more only if they need to). Three subscription plans are available with Ning 3.0:

  • Ning Basic ($25/mo with annual billing)
  • Ning Performance ($49/mo with annual billing)
  • Ning Ultimate ($99/mo with annual billing)

Will more support options be available for Ning 3.0?

We are introducing Priority Support with the Ning Ultimate Plan.  Any issues submitted via ticket will be answered within the same business day.  Phone support calls will get the highest priority and be handled by our top Advocates.

I own a Ning 2.0 Network.  How does this affect me?

Nothing changes for you today.  Ning 2.0 Networks won't be able to upgrade to Ning 3.0 until we have put in place the infrastructure needed to seamlessly automate the process. Migration tools are in development and you'll have at least a year after their release to make the transition to Ning 3.0. You'll be able to choose when that happens for your site.

Update 3/12/14: Migration is now available for Ning 2.0 Networks excited to make use of the Ning 3.0 Platform. We're in Phase One Migration right now and Ning 2.0 Networks will have at least a year after this release to make the transition to Ning 3.0. See the Upgrading to Ning 3.0 FAQs for more information about the migration process.

Can I try out a Ning 3.0 today?

Sure! Feel free to create a new network today to test drive the new and improved Ning 3.0. We're still offering a trial period to give you a taste of what Ning has to offer. Just remember to cancel your 14 day trial if you do not wish to continue.

Can I upgrade my current Ning 2.0 Network to Ning 3.0 today?

Yes! See our Upgrading to Ning 3.0 FAQs for more information on the Upgrade process and timing.

Do I have to upgrade my Ning Network to Ning 3.0?  If so, when?

Yes, eventually. We will be asking all of our current customers to upgrade to Ning 3.0. But you'll have plenty of time to think about when you'd like to transition. You have at least a year from the Phase One migration release (March 12, 2014) to make the move, and you'll get to decide when your upgrade to Ning 3.0 happens.

Can I test out Ning 3.0 and go back to my old network if I want to?

You can create a new trial network to test out Ning 3.0 at any time.  However, once you've completed the process to upgrade your current network to Ning 3.0, you will not be able to revert back to Ning 2.0.

Are you going to stop development on Ning 2.0?

Yes, mostly. We're shifting our focus to Ning 3.0, our next generation product. We will continue to fix major bugs and perform regular maintenance on Ning 2.0, but we're aggressively shifting our focus to Ning 3.0.  We encourage you to upgrade to Ning 3.0 and enjoy these new and improved features as soon as you are able.

Key Feature Improvements and Additions

How is a Ning 3.0 network different from my current Ning Network?

  • A redesigned Blog feature
  • Much greater page and layout flexibility, including the ability to create multiple instances of each feature
  • Granular controls for privacy, contributors and moderation for each page and instance of a feature
  • A simpler, yet more powerful Design Studio
  • An updated, logical 960pixel 16 column HTML grid for expert designers
  • A more contemporary, clean look to all features
  • Responsive design so your content and navigation automatically adjust to smartphones and tablets
  • A new, simpler way to pull in a YouTube or Vimeo channel

Which features are currently included in Ning 3.0?

Ning 3.0 Networks offer the following features:

  • Photos
  • Blogs
  • Forum
  • Members
  • Groups
  • Profile Pages
  • Custom Pages
  • Latest Activity
  • Social Channels
  • Language Editor
  • Broadcast Messaging

Which features do you plan to add?  When?

We plan to add Video, Events, Chat, and more along the way. Please note that the Video feature will only allow members to embed videos, not upload them. However, videos that were previously uploaded on your network will still be available in later phases of migration.

Why did you release Ning 3.0 with so few features?

Redesigning the HTML of each feature on Ning takes time and multiple engineering teams.  Rather than wait until all features are completed, we decided to release Ning 3.0 now for two main reasons.  Many current Network Creators and most new customers only need the core set of features we released in Ning 3.0 to build and cultivate their community.  We wanted these customers to start benefiting from the value of Ning 3.0 as soon as possible.  We also expect we will get a LOT of feedback from Network Creators and prospective customers about Ning 3.0.  We plan to rapidly make changes based on your feedback – even as we continue to redesign the remaining Ning features and release them in Ning 3.0.  We feel this is a much more efficient and effective approach to delivering you the best Ning 3.0 platform possible. Have suggestions, comments, feedback? Submit it here

We’ve created a Ning 3.0 hub on Creators to provide an up-to-date roadmap for releasing the remaining Ning features in Ning 3.0 and to collect your feedback on the initial release.

Will all current Ning features be included in Ning 3.0 eventually?

No, not all current Ning 2.0 features will be added to Ning 3.0.  Check the Product Roadmap for features we plan on including.  We do not plan to add a Music Player, Ning Apps or Virtual Gifts.

Why won’t I eventually be able to upload Videos or Music to my Ning 3.0 network?

Our goal with Ning 3.0 is provide the best solution for cultivating online communities.  We are focusing engineering resources on features which are core to that solution – publishing features such as Blog and Photos; community features such as Member Profiles, Forums, Groups, Events, Activity Feed and Chat; a flexible Site Builder; and a simple, yet powerful Design Studio.   With Videos and Music, 3rd parties, such as YouTube and Vimeo, offer powerful solutions, often for free.  These 3rd party solutions are widely-used by Network Creators.  Rather than focus significant scarce engineering resources on updating our Video and Music features, we decided to improve how Ning 3.0 integrates with 3rd party platforms. Please note that videos that were previously uploaded on your network will still be available when you upgrade.  You can expect to see further improvements to integration with 3rd party platforms in the near future.

Why don’t you plan to add Ning Apps to Ning 3.0?

Most of these 3rd party applications were built when widgets and embedded content were not so widely available. Now that it’s easier to find and embed widgets and content on your Network, we've decided to do away with Ning Apps entirely. Many former Ning Apps have a widget version available from the third party service directly.

Which languages are available in Ning 3.0?  When do you plan to add others? Can I make translations in Ning 3.0 with the Language Editor?

Ning 3.0 is now available in a total of 6 languages: English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, and German. (Read more on how to change the language settings of your network or create a new translation here.)

Upgrade Process and Timing

Update: Upgrading to Ning 3.0

When will I be able to upgrade my current Ning Network to Ning 3.0?

Phase One of Migration was released to all Ning 2.0 Networks on March 12, 2014.

Will I be forced to upgrade my Ning Network to Ning 3.0?  If so, when?

Yes, eventually. We will be asking all of our current customers to upgrade to Ning 3.0. But you'll have plenty of time to think about when you'd like to transition. You'll have at least a year from the release of Phase One to make the move, and you'll get to decide when your upgrade to Ning 3.0 happens.

How will this upgrade process work?  What will I need to do?  How long will it take?

Check out our Help Center for articles on What to Expect When You're Migrating and Setting Up Your Ning 3.0 Network Post-Migration

Now that Phase One has been released, we are continuing to refine the migration process to create a seamless upgrade process with several objectives. In later phases, we plan to offer a simple import (import all members and content) as well as a more advanced import in which you can choose which members and content you’d like to import. We're also working on tools for removing inactive members.

How will my members be impacted by the upgrade process?

We are designing the import process to have minimal impact on your members.

What will happen to my current Ning Network design, including any CSS or custom code I've added?

With Ning 3.0, we’ve completely redesigned the underlying HTML of all Ning features to make the presentation of your community content (blogs, forums, photos, videos, members and more) looks sharper, cleaner, more professional and responsive to the device a member is using. We’ve also redesigned the Design Studio to be both simpler and more powerful, so that anyone can create a stand-out, unique network design.  One consequence of the HTML redesign is Ning 2.0 themes and CSS customization won’t work in Ning 3.0.  While basic design elements such as background and text and link colors can transfer over, when you upgrade your current network to Ning 3.0, you will need to either recreate your current design in Ning 3.0 or take advantage of the opportunity to refresh your network design using the new, more powerful Design Studio.

Will I keep the same URL when I upgrade?  Will domain mapping to my custom domain be affected?

You will keep the same URL (yoursubdomain.ning.com) when you upgrade to Ning 3.0.  If you are using a custom domain, the domain mapping you set up will not be affected.

What will happen to my currently uploaded music when I upgrade, given this feature won't be included in Ning 3.0?

You won't be able to access any uploaded music after you upgrade your network to Ning 3.0.  We recommend that you use the archive feature to download the music files before you upgrade.

What will happen to custom text boxes, RSS feeds and custom pages in my current Ning Network when I upgrade to Ning 3.0?

When you upgrade to Ning 3.0, we will not automatically transfer custom text boxes or RSS feeds.  However, when you design and set-up your Ning 3.0 network during the upgrade process, you will have the opportunity to copy and paste any custom text, HTML, URLs or images to your Ning 3.0 network. Custom Pages are supported for migration.

Will I be able to use the mobile app I built for my Ning 2.0 Network once I've upgraded to Ning 3.0?

Yes.  Your members will be able to use the custom mobile app you built for your Ning 2.0 Network once you've upgraded to Ning 3.0.  However, we recommend you test and modify the mobile app to accommodate the greater flexibility and options in Ning 3.0, including multiple blogs, forums and photos instances.

New Subscription Plans and Pricing

What subscription plans are available for Ning 3.0?

  • Ning Basic ($25/mo with annual billing) is our most affordable package with the features you need to get started. Ning Basic networks can have up to 1,000 members.
  • Ning Performance ($49/mo with annual billing) is best for growing communities which need more members and phone support. Ning Performance networks can have up to 10,000 members.

Why did you change the subscription plans for Ning 3.0?

We changed our subscription plans to make it much easier for new Network Creators to choose a plan and to align our pricing with Network Creator success.  Our previous subscription plans (Ning Mini, Plus and Pro) were differentiated by features, storage & bandwidth and support level.  We frequently heard from prospective customers that they had a difficult time determining which plan was best for them.  They were confused by the feature differences and had no way of estimating their future storage and bandwidth consumption.  And new Network Creators who chose Mini or Plus were sometimes dissatisfied with the feature limitations of those plans.

All of our new subscription plans (Ning Basic, Performance and Ultimate) include the same core Ning feature set (including Paid Access when it is released), so all Network Creators have the tools they need to succeed. The new plans are differentiated by community size (members and administrators) and service level.  We feel it will be much easier for a new Network Creator to estimate the size of their community and select the level of support they need.  We also feel strongly that our customers should only pay more if they are succeeding and getting value out of the Ning platform.  With the new plans, Network Creators will only need to upgrade plans if their community thrives and grows.

Will my plan be upgraded automatically if I exceed the member limits for my Plan?

No, we will not upgrade your plan automatically. If you reach the member limit for your plan, no new members will be able to join your network. You may upgrade to a higher plan to allow more members to join or remove members to make space for new ones.

Is Ning 3.0 going to cost more?

It depends. Since usage of Ning 3.0 isn't based on storage but on community size and level of support, some customers will actually end up paying less. If you're a small community and don't require a higher level of support, it's possible you'll pay less. If you've got a million members, you'll undoubtedly pay more. We think this activity-based model will make much more sense for the vast majority of our customers.

Is pricing changing for current Ning plans (Mini, Plus and Pro), too?

No.  The pricing for Ning Mini, Plus and Pro will remain the same.

Can I keep my current plan when I upgrade my Ning Network to Ning 3.0?

No.  You will need to select Ning Basic, Ning Performance or Ning Ultimate when you upgrade to Ning 3.0 or create a new Ning Network.

Will Pearson Sponsorships be available for Ning 3.0 networks?

Pearson Sponsorships will not be available for Ning 3.0 networks.

Why don’t you plan to offer Ning Mini anymore (or a similar low-priced plan)?

To offer the very low price point of the Ning Mini plan, we limited the features and membership included in this plan.   Over time, we've found that customers who chose the Mini plan are both less satisfied and less successful at building thriving communities. Many Mini customers have told us pointedly that the Mini plan doesn't meet their needs; that it's missing key features, and that—perhaps most important—it doesn't offer the higher level of customer service they need.

We designed the new Ning Basic plan to include all of the features an emerging social leader needs to cultivate their online community and grow it to 1,000 members.  Ning Basic includes email support from our Advocacy team.  We priced the plan to cover the engineering, infrastructure and support costs we incur to offer Ning Basic – and still offer a very strong value for customers.

I currently have a Mini network sponsored by Pearson. Will I be able to continue using my Ning 2.0 network or will I be forced to upgrade to Ning 3.0?

Eventually we will ask all of our current customers to upgrade to Ning 3.0. But you'll have plenty of time to think about when you'd like to transition. We'll give you at least a year to make the move after the Phase One Migration release, and you'll get to decide when your upgrade to Ning 3.0 happens.  After this date, all Ning 2.0 networks, including those sponsored by Pearson, will no longer be available for use. We hope you'll continue to use Ning and plan to upgrade to Ning 3.0 over the next year.
