(That last point is key.) Focusing on useful and unique content first. Only THEN think about monetizing". 

John Rampton, founder of Due and Calendar, blogging about his successes and epic failures for Entrepreneur, TechCrunch and Mashable: "Try to write posts 2000-10000 words in length and then have 10 supporting 1000 word articles that link back and support those articles. I’ve found this drives a lot of organic traffic to our site. Then it’s up to us to convert".
