  • I should note that I am able to create a page or group and then link groups to it, but what I really need is the ability to create a group and allow all groups under it to inherit the members/permission settings of the parent.
  • Hi Dan,

I typed up a detailed reply yesterday, and somehow it went "poof " and I didn't have time to rewrite it. In any event, I am a web developer, and I still struggle with all the hoops and blocks on Ning. I have not found a way around the parent/child group issue, and I'm greatly disappointed in Ning's lack of simple/common functionality. Hopefully now that they have an influx of cash from the Pro members, they can bring us some of the things we are asking for.

Another great one that we are dealing with is the inability of group privacy settings to be changed once they are created. We have a site that had a free section, with the bulk being subscription only. Hence, we set up most of our groups to require permission to join. Now we have gone all subscription and would like all of or subscribers to have free access to most groups, be we can't change them without totally re-creating them, which is not possible.

We learn what we need as we go, and our plan changes as we go, and Ning does not have the flexibility to make the changes we need, such as splitting/combining or moving forum threads, assigning subscription levels to members, etc.

I wish we had API access, and I wish I didn't have to wade through 64 pages of Language settings just to figure out how to change a confirmation email because the search feature does not work well.

My client chose Ning, and they have grown too much to move it elsewhere, so I guess we just work with what we have for now.

    Thanks for your feedback.

  • Hi Dan,

Did you ever come up with a solution to your Parent/Child group issue. I notice that Jeannette more or less went on a tangent and the topic was closed for discussion.

I too need to nest groups within groups without requiring members of the main group to join the rest. I have paying members, and I don't want non-paying members to be able access the "sub" groups via the Groups page.

Ultimately, I would like the parent group to be a top tab, with the child groups as sub-tabs under it, without requiring my paying members to have to request membership in each child group.

    Thx.

    Shannon
