There are a few things you can do here. To hide the Invite tab up top, go to Manage-Appearance and click "Advanced". Just drop this text anywhere in that field:
#xg_tab_invite {display:none;}
There are a few more invite links smattered around the site. You can be sure that no one can join your network if they do end up getting invited by turning on member moderation, so you can reject any members you don't want:
