Update to Product Roadmap and Communication Changes

Thank you for your patience over the past several weeks. As you know, we closely follow and appreciate the feedback you share on Creators, and we’d like to make a couple of important announcements related to your posts.

First, regarding the product, the team has been working over the last several months on re-architecting and re-developing a new Activity Feed for Ning 3.0. The new Activity Feed will include the addition of statuses and more embeds based on pasting links into the status field. This isn’t everything that the team is working on but the most significant short term new capability. We are planning to release this feature in July.

We also wanted to address the downtime that some of you experienced on May 26th and 27th. After the scheduled maintenance on Monday to update a group of servers, we discovered that some of the backup servers were malfunctioning. We've corrected this and have changed our operating procedures to prevent this from happening again.

On the communication side, based on several factors including resources and priorities, we have made the decision that we will no longer be involved in providing day-to-day support and feedback through the Creators community. Communication from the Ning team needs to be focused on product capabilities and new releases and other general announcements such as this one. Our team is focusing on expanding some of the planned features that we already have in development. Once we have more information to share with you, we will do it here.

Please continue to use this community as a productive place to have conversations about how to build, grow, and manage Ning Networks. We will continue to provide technical support through tickets and phone. As always, phone support is available to those with networks on Pro, Performance and Ultimate plans. Our technical support team is available Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm PST.

  • In a month, exited from 1.500 to more than 15.000 team members!!!

As creator of Orbati Social Network, I am very happy to have trusted have transfered my contacts for Platform Ning 3.0. Even with a few missing tools being implemented, had the creativity to take the performance of the platform to implement some features in our network and third party apps developed by TJ Friend of JQuelryHelp, we are taking a look and dynamism to our network, which has attracted several members. But to complain about, we adding us to Ning in efforts to create a large modern social platform. We are part of Orbati.com just have to thank Ning-Mode Social for everything. Since 2008 we are here, that was the Ning gave me achieve the dream of creating a social network in Brazil, at a time when I had no financial resource for this. I know that at times we go through difficulties, but together, believing in each other, grow increasingly. We continue to believe in the orbati.com potential Ning 3.0 platform. Thank you Ning-Mode Social!

      • Now why would you go and characterize those who are not happy with their networks as those who are "negative" and will "rain on his parade"? You do realize that you are just trolling when you say crap like that?

It's great when someone gets something to work for them, but that doesn't mean it's a solution for everyone. If you don't need a social network with social features, then Ning 3.0 might be perfect. Some people don't need chat, events, proper forums, better design, etc. But a lot of us do require those things, and expect not to have those things removed while being asked to pay even more money.

So kudos to those who don't need any of those things and can make a sparse platform work. I'm right there with the celebration. Congratulations, Antonio!

But Diane, please don't characterize those of us who have legitimate frustration with a company we have invested thousands of dollars into, and many many many hours of our lives, only to have been kicked to the curb with dismissive misinformation and removal of key features, as somehow just "being negative." Give me a frickin' break.

        • +1 what CocteauBoy said.  I see the comment he is referring to was edited.

            • Yep I do when I realize I "mis-spoke."  And then all following comments make no sense.  Gotta love threads....

It's become sooo tiresome to call others 'negative' for over a year and a half now.  I want to keep the features my members have enjoyed for years in my 2.0 ning network...it perfectly functions and fills the needs of my members.  I love my Ning 2.0 and I'd be thrilled to keep it for years to come if Ning maintained it, even with the occasional reasonable price increases. I'm not ready to move just yet and I still hold out a little hope...but if I am forced to give up my 2.0 while 3.0 is still functioning poorly or unfinished, I'll have to move to another platform that offers the same or better features- But I consider that a pro-active and positive move too- setting up a great new functioning home for my 5000 members!  Whatever I do for my members' happiness is a positive thing.  I'm so happy to hear from various others about how they are faring in their decisions- it's all so helpful.  People who keep calling others 'negative'...well I think that's just a negative thing in itself.

        • I am very happy for Antonio, he made it work yet why do we need 3rd party plug ins/apps to get the 3.0 to be functional? I also find it interesting how JQuery (whom I love) posts then right after Antonio pushing the JQuery apps, I've never even seen Antonio on here before no matter I AM glad his community is working and looking great this is what we hope to achieve on the 3.0 but not with 3rd party apps but within Nings own platform.

            Skye,

I know that the best thing for me to do, is stay quiet. But, I just can't, not on this one. TJ has given away more free scripts and time than anyone has ever given away to the Ning Community at large. He spends countless hours behind the scenes, pounding away at code, not just to sell, but to give away for free. I hope your comment finally convinces him to sell anything he offers. He is my business partner on some of the apps, but truly not why I react to this. Even before any partnership, I was a tremendous fan of his. He is the most humble, giving, thoughtful person on any Internet forum I have ever met. He puts up with me, even when I'm homicidal. He just sends a kind message back in return to my frustrating rants. For you to remotely insinuate that he put someone up to advertising his name is just wrong, and truly shocking.

            Best to you, no joke.

            Jen

            • Firstly you are correct it was out of line but sometimes one doesn't know what goes on behind the scenes. The comments were more toward how Antonio posted immediately basically pushing the 3rd party apps which honestly for years have helped us. When I stated I like JQuery I meant it or I wouldn't have said it but the struggle within this thread and Ning has left us floundering therefore the point is for Ning to do their job and not have us input 3 party apps to complete a platform, which is what was intimated.

          • Hi Skye,

            Thanks for the love!

I can't speak for anyone else so I won't speculate on why Antonio posted or why he said what he said.  But I'll speak for myself and say there was no collusion.  I didn't ask him to post, but I did thank him for his feedback when I saw it, just as I try to thank everyone for their constructive feedback, be it positive or negative.

To restate my position on 3rd party apps - I think it is usually best when Ning provides features for the Ning platform so that 3rd party apps are not needed to make Ning functional.  Ning's features are generally going to be more efficient than anyone trying to implement the same thing as a 3rd party app, and generally Ning's features are provided as part of the package so there is no additional fee.

The reality, as I see it, is that Ning has not provided some features yet, and no one seems to know if or when they might provide some features.  Some NCs may feel that certain features are essential to their site.  If Ning doesn't provide that feature, I can think of three choices - they can wait for Ning to provide it, they can leave Ning and move to another platform, or they can research 3rd party apps to provide the features they need.

As I've said, I am all for freedom of choice!  If someone decides to do one of those three things, that's great and I support their decision.  If someone decides to wait and wants to urge Ning to provide the feature and wants to express their dissatisfaction, I support that.  If someone finds a new platform that works for them, I support that too.

I think it's good that we have freedom of choice here on this forum, to say what we are thinking.  I think this is a great bunch of people who are passionate about their communities and speak here with passion.  People generally express their opinions with respect.  On occasion, things are said, and people apologize, which is a hard thing to do, yet very noble, in my opinion.  We all make mistakes, I know I have!  But I still think that this is a vibrant community filled with some outstanding individuals.

Each individual has their own idea of what Ning could and should be.  That means people see the same complex thing, this Ning platform, in different ways.  For some, the positives outweigh the negatives, for others it is the opposite.  But surely those generally happy with Ning can see that there are issues, and surely those who dislike the state of Ning can see that some things work well.  In my opinion, there is good and bad to be easily found if you look for it.

I'm trying to stay fairly neutral and just play the cards I've been dealt.  It's not the best hand in the world but I can work with it.  I'll just keep on working on what I'm working on, and provide the freedom of choice to this community.  So its back to work for me!  I wish you all, all the best, for you and your communities!

            "TJ"
