Changes to Ning 3.0 Based on Your Feedback

We launched Ning 3.0 just over two weeks ago. While the overall market response has been really awesome, we have – based on the feedback here on Creators – somewhat underestimated the confusion and potential pain this new generation platform could create for some of you.

We value and carefully consider your input, and have decided to offer more flexibility and appreciation for you all as existing Ning customers.

Grandfathered in at 2x Member Limits

Rather than differentiate plans by features, storage and bandwidth, we set member limits for each plan. Number of members is a visible and intuitive measure of Network Creator success. We believe that you deserve a break when the time comes to upgrade. Therefore, existing Ning Networks will be grandfathered in at 2x the member limit of the new plans.

When you upgrade from Ning 2.0 to Ning 3.0, the Basic plan will support 2,000 members and the Performance plan will support 20,000 members. According to our data, this means that less than 1% of all our existing customers should see any price increase.

3-Month Post Upgrade Grace Period

We have also decided to give you an extra three more months after you upgrade before applying any member limits. And we will provide you with tools during and after the upgrade process to remove long-time inactive members from your network and clean house.

Limitless Moderators

Several of you voiced concerns with limiting the number of moderators. Recruiting active members to help moderate is a powerful tool for NCs to effectively manage their community and reward their most engaged members. We agree and we will be changing our pricing plans to reflect this. All Ning 3.0 subscribers can have an unlimited number of moderators (capped by your members plan limit). Moderators can be given full moderation privileges (approve, feature, edit, delete or suspend) for multiple features, content type and/or members. However the Ning 3.0 plans include a limitation on the number of Administrators—those with full access to the design, layout and settings of your network— Administrators will be limited to 2, 5 and 10 respectively.

'Powered by Ning | Mode Social' Footer Requirement

As we have shared in our FAQs and in several discussion topics, displaying "Powered by Ning | Mode Social" in network footers is important for the health of our business.  While we recognize that some of you will decide to leave the platform on account of it, we will not waive this requirement. However to mitigate the impact for some of you, we do intend to put an affiliate program in place that will allow you to gain some value for clickthroughs and referrals. We’ll also provide more flexibility in terms of where and how to display the logo (options such as centering it).

Ning 2.0 Upgrade, Migration and Retirement Timeline

As we have announced, we are working on a seamless upgrade process for Ning 2.0 Networks and plan to release it this summer. Once the upgrade process is available, Ning 2.0 Networks will have at least one year to move to Ning 3.0. We will confirm the exact schedule for the Ning 2.0 retirement when we officially release these migration tools. Before we officially release these tools, we are planning to work with many of you on a beta program for this key feature to make sure that it works as well as can be expected and minimize all changes and concerns for the vast majority of our existing customers.

We hope these changes address most of your concerns and give you a bit more confidence in our own ability to listen to you all. We appreciate the time and energy you pour into your communities, and are committed to delivering you a great and viable platform for years to come.

Thank you all for your feedback; we couldn’t do this without you. If you haven’t already, please take advantage of our offer to create a Ning 3.0 Sandbox Network. We would love for you to experience the redesign firsthand and get a jump-start on developing your Ning 3.0 Network. Don't forget to drop by and let us know how it's going!

NOTE: Post Edited on 4/29/14 to reflect Glam Media's name change to Mode Media.

      • I stand corrected, you have a phone number for the management and you have made contact - along with a few others - In all my years of dealing with Ning I was never referred to anyone by phone to resolve an issue no matter how many times I asked.

From what I am reading, you made no headway or received any valuable information - you received exactly what politicians are so good at, a nice reply that means absolutely nothing but answers your inquiry, and so you feel you have made some headway.

What you really received is a lot of lower management stalling because there is chaos on the upper levels of the company.  So using a phone number to reach the staff who has no answers that are genuine for their customers is of no use to any of us.

        • no i gave the number to management however i never called management

what i said us thetech supprt people arent really aware whst the developers are doing till its nearly done

thats whenthey finaly told me whats beuing worked on and that it will be released soon

try calling the management number yiourself instead of assumming theres chaos call and find out yourself

i amn really getting sick and tired of everyone saying that nings dying that the  managements in chaos and all this crap simpoly because they dont know a damn thing about whats going on in ning cause noones come forth and told you...and none of you bothered to call and ask

  • This might seem like an obvious thing but has anyone called to the office of Ning and asked to have a meeting with a senior representative. If I lived over there, within any reasonable distance of their offices I would most definitely do that.  Are you all saying to me that the the company that looks after my IT needs, for my business, would refuse to meet. Has anyone tried it? We talk away all day here online, but maybe not in the real world.

    • You can't even have a significant dialogue when you send in a request for a help ticket - you receive two sentences in reply and if you are a NING 2 creator, you get pay dirt because they are not wasting their time on NING 2 problems anymore - I have been there and dealt with it - and if you think now you can call them up and put your weight on them, you must be in another zone then the rest of us.  And.... I have not seen a phone number listed in all the years I have been connected to NING that I could call to speak in person, or else, I would have burned down the lines along time ago.  So unless you have tried this new approach yourself, don't even suggest it to the rest of us!

      • what are u talking sabgout

i called them 3 times today

        the numbers 855 233 6436

ive called them hundreds of times

you wont get an exec at thast nmber thats the tech support number but every suggestion you make they will pass on to the development team or to the  execs or whaever needs to go to

but if your going to call with such an attuitude how do youever expect to be taken seriusly

but you can call and talk to ppl wsat ning anytime you want  and ive often spent a good 20 minutes on a single call with them

        • hell i call so often i didnt even have to look up the number itsmemorized

          • I have spoken with NING support on numerous occasions....they are all very nice and efficient.  That does not make them NING execs....nor does it mean they are NING anything.  It makes no difference to me who runs the ship....not one bit, as long as the ship runs.  This ship hasn't sailed smoothly for over a year.  I am not defending nor dissing any side to this...I am expressing my opinion.  Just like you do.....only you go into paragraphs.

            • i posted the corporate hq number too

and i know supports not theexecs

but when you make suggestions they take notes and pass ythem on to theexecs and or dev teams

so you can communicate in a way indirectky to the execs through the supoortteam you just probly wont get areply however   they count up the suggestions  the morte suggestions that  are saying roughly the same things the more likely thery get attention

and u can try the corporate number i posted  just 10 min ago and see what u can accomplish

              i mighttry it myself tomorow

      • If I was over there Trish I would travel several hundred miles to meet. We need to get off these forums and try and arrange meetings.

        • so someone in cali arroange a meeting  go as a rep  we can  either do google hangouts webcam  meeting or simply post a meeting with ning discussion where everyine can post thier concerns and whoever meets with them can post thier replies
