New Developer Alert: February 2013 Breaking Changes
If a New Developer Alert arrived in your inbox, you'll want to update your Sign-up and Sign-in App on Facebook. Don't worry--It's easy!
You got the note because Facebook is doing away with Authenticated Referrals and removing the ability to post to a friends wall via the Graph API. You can see all of Facebook's "breaking changes" here.
Facebook says that these changes will be "permanently enabled for all apps in 1 day on Tuesday, February 5, 2013," which leads me to believe that you could get away without taking any action, but there's no need to take a chance. It is easy to update your app:
- Log in to your Facebook Developers page
- Select your app
- Click "Edit Migrations"
- Scroll down to the Migrations section
- Select the radio button next to "February 6th Breaking Changes"
- Click "Save"
The "enabled" app performed well on February 3rd. If you run into any issues with the update on February 6th, let us know.

Allison, I'm a little stuck on this. I have a July update warning. When I go to the Facebook Developer's page, I get the same screen as Fedmedic. I have no other account apart from a page login in. The page was originally created as a personal Facebook account then converted to a page managed by my personal account. If I try and go to the FB Developpper page whilst logged in as my page the address bar flashes quickly through a few addresses and then takes me to my page.
So, I went back to my personal account. Using this, I can get to the Facebook developer page but only see what FedMedic did.
Option 3 was to try and create a new social sign-in, as you suggest. I'm getting there via the link on my Ning Facebook integration page:
When I click on the link, I'm taken to the following, from which I can't find a way to edit anything:
So, as things stand I can't find a way to edit migrations or delete and replace my app. Any help much appreciated.
Thanks
Allison thank you for posting this. That July update reminder was becoming annoying and I wasn't certain if we were supposed to add the URLs it was asking for. Done
I got new developer alert from Facebook in email for "July 2013 Breaking Changes," can it be handled like this one or is there something different this time?
I dont' see the February 2013 breaking changes option, only for March and April. Should I select those instead?
You can. It does seem, however, that Facebook automatically enabled those changes on for February. The message was intended to alert users of its updates and encourage them to opt-in, but it's not a requirement. They will likely do the same (auto-enable updates) moving forward.
Done. (Thanks!)
Way ahead of the game! Not a bad idea to pre-approve these updates. I may go back and do this myself, but am also curious to receive Facebook's next Breaking Changes reminder.
I got the notifications and I went to go fix and "February 6th Breaking Changes" is not listed.
Please see attached image.
Hey Laura, My suspicion is that Facebook automatically enabled these changes for you. The email that was delivered on Sunday stated that the changes would be "permanently enabled for all apps in 1 day on Tuesday, February 5, 2013." I don't think there's anything to worry about unless you can't sign in using that same Facebook app. Let me know if you run into any issues.
Nice. Thanks for confirming this, Ofelia!
