A Few Requested Updates

Hi All,

This afternoon we released a few updates for Ning 3.0 based mostly on recent requests you've made. Here's a rundown:

Group Page Defaults

Now when a Group is created and set to invite-only, any pages created in the group will default to Members Only; this only effects the default setting. Thanks Jen!

Increased Limits for using Profile Questions to set new members into Categories and Groups

We had a limit of 10 connections that could be made between multiple choice profile answers and the ability to use those answers to put new members into a corresponding Group or Category. That clearly wasn't enough for some folks, and we've bumped the limit to 100.

New Category options for displaying Groups, Photos and Forum Posts

SweetPotato let us know that there was an inconsistency in the display options for certain page types when you add them to a custom page. Groups, Photos and Forums didn't provide an option to filter by individual categories, while the Blog and Members did. We've fixed that now.

Optional Message when making a Friend Request

We've provided an option for members to add a personal message to Friend Requests. This will be attached to the outgoing message.

Bugs

We've squashed a few bugs in this release too, including a fix for the activity item issues some of you saw with the Messaging release; that one went out a couple of days ago.

  • Thanks Ning !

  • Phil,

It's November.  We're still waiting for Events (and to find out if Events will be able to be set up within Groups) and Paid Access (which isn't even on the list of items to come for 3.0).  Can you provide any ETA on these?  We keep delaying launch of our ministry because of these things - and if you remember, we decided to go with the 3.0 platform based on Ning's commitment of having it done by end of summer.

Don't mean to sound impatient, but if these things are not right around the corner, we need to explore alternatives.

    Thanks,

    Tony

  • Any news on being able to update a status (facebook type) and language editor, Only need those things added for the site I have

  • Hi everyone - thanks for these updates. Is there a release date for Chat yet?

    • + 1 ! how is it possible to sell a network without such a feature ?!! we planned to use a group to make "chat" just like in the 90...

    • I'm with you Jenni.   If that came out, I'd migrate today.

  • Good work, Thank you.

Phil, Please make urls in profile question answers rel="nofollow"

I've mentioned this a few times but no one has answered. I don't want a site of spammers or to be to deranked by google.

    Please!

    Thanks

  • Thanks for the fixes here. I have a desperate need for the API and events for a client upgrade I'm doing in December, but I see they've been pushed down the line of rollouts. What kind of timeline might we be looking at for the API at least? Two or three months, more? I know it's hard to make promises, but any info would be great so we can plan ahead.

    • Hi Neal,

The API is available now, although it hasn't been formally released and the documentation is sparse. If you'd like to take it for a spin, please shoot me a message.
