Today we're pleased to provide our Ning 3.0 Network Creators with a new tool that automatically detects spam when content is added to a network and puts it in a special place where it can be reviewed.
You'll find the Spam Folder in the Content Management section of your network. The operation is pretty simple: when a member posts something that our classifier thinks is spam, the person adding the content sees a message letting them know that it's been flagged, and that it will need to be reviewed by an administrator. Content that gets added by Network Creators and administrators will be exempt from this folder, so make sure you're choosing your administrators carefully and wisely.
Other members won't see content that gets flagged until it gets approved. Administrators can visit the spam folder and see any content that's been caught. If a piece of content isn't spam (we think the chances of this are very low), then it can be marked as Not Spam, and it will get published. If it is spam, then it can be deleted, and the member who posted it can be banned at the same time.
Spam removal
Content left in the spam folder for longer than 14 days will be automatically and permanently deleted from your network, which helps reduce the storage your content consumes, and makes it easier for you to manage the spam folder when new spam is posted.
Thanks,
Phil

this is wonderful news but can u define "content"
does it include
etc
some of those spam types are very rarely used but i guarantee once you cut off 1 spam sourse they will exploit other creative sources
example
my sites got shops the shops use zencart wich has a suggest this product to a freind feature
spammers will exploit that suggesting your product to thier emaillist but add on thier spam to the mail sent so it looks like your shops sending spam
they will find creative ways to spam if content doesnt include all content..
Good work Phil. Thanks. This is another Content Management Tool that will help us to manager our time and work load.
What I would like to know is what is the classifier calling spam? We could do tests to make sure the types of posts we would most likely see gets or does not get through the filter. A suggestion here, we should define eventually, our own spam parameters. For example, the simple things like not allowing emails in posts or links in posts without some kind of content filter or relative words that go along with it. For example, if someone wants to spam another member, all they have to do is write something like this. "Hi, my name is Silvia I need to contact you please it is very urgent. Please write me here my email address silvia26@yahoo.com thanks." I made this up of course but you get the idea, broken English, adding everyone as a friend regardless of who it is, or simply adding random comments. That is primarily the spam I see, or for example, automatic blog posts not 2 minutes after a member signs up and it often has to do with content not even relative to the network as a whole. It is just a suggestion, but being able to define our own spam parameters would give us power over any posts we are likely to encounter. Something even as simple as defining how many posts per day, 0 for unlimitted or specific and general strings based on keywords which define general unrelated words or even words or phrases set up by a language filter which could determine what gets sent where. There are literally so many different possibilities with this tool, so thanks for creating it!
it seems a few of us have the same concerns/questions
i can see a reason for secrecy as in you announce how it finds spam yoir telling spammers how to slip through the cracks and beat it
but at the same time i think a at least vague explanation of how it works and what exctly is scanned would help alot
also if we can move spam to the folder so it learns new patterns to watch out for that would be awesome
Alexander another Creator asked just that question earlier. Here's Corey''s response https://creators.ning.com/forum/topics/when-will-i-be-able-to-upgrad...
It seems the date has been pushed back from mid to late summer, to late summer. Hopefully it doesn't get pushed back to fall.
Hopefully it does, I would like to upgrade only when all of the features Ning is majorly releasing is live. We still have a lot of work to design, I feel first.
Well, that's what I meant, naturally. I'm hoping Ning with all of its features are released by the end of summer, not the fall.
Corey was the one who responded, Kos.
oops! fixed it. tks
