We're doing it already with outbrain, for a long time now. In fact I added the first one to Alice's site (MyModernMet). I will tell you though, although I love outbrain, it will never show related posts perfectly on Ning. Go to my site and Alice's to see how it works. Unfortunately as in any script on Ning, it can only be added to custom code box (loads last).
I do believe it helps user retention and engagement. And last but not least (although tricky), you can do this yourself if you are a member of the JenSocial VIP club. The instructions are there. And, JP gives a free tip about this.

I worked for 2 weeks with outbrain to kickstart this working on Ning sites, and although somewhat clunky, I've been quite pleased with it.
