Migration

Why should I migrate?

NING 3.0 boasts a plethora of advantages and quality improvements over the previous version of the platform. These include:

  1. Advanced customization
  • You will have more themes and more tools to customize the design of your network.
  • A newly integrated Landing Page Builder will help you design a professional landing page that could serve as a homepage for your network.

  1. Better control over your website and content
  • Customize the structure of any page and add the desired features in a couple of clicks.
  • Create multiple instances of each feature (blogs, forums, videos, etc.).
  • Allow or disallow network members to use specific features based on their member category.
  • Get more flexibility when structuring your network and make it easier for your members to find and access the content they need.

  1. Flexible privacy control

Decide who can contribute content to your network and use its specific feature instances.

  1. Mobile responsiveness by default

Since most traffic comes from mobile devices nowadays, your website needs to adjust to different screen sizes. Also, mobile responsiveness is one of the major SEO factors that influence your network rankings on search engines.

  1. SEO features

Due to frequent changes in SEO regulations, NING 2.0 was lacking SEO functionality for a long time. Meanwhile, NING 3.0 offers SEO tools to help you improve the online visibility of your network.

  1. Advanced eCommerce

With NING 3.0, you can monetize content, accept donations, or set up multi-level membership scenarios in which different member categories have different access rights for adding/viewing content.

  1. Advanced API

The next-gen API provides users with more flexibility in terms of advanced customization and scalability.

  1. Polls

Launching polls and surveys allow you to get feedback from your members on different topics.

  1. Greater development potential

Newer versions of the product will be compatible with NING 3.0 networks only, offering even broader possibilities for customization and scalability.

  1. Regular updates

While the development of NING 2.0 has been stopped, NING 3.0 gets constant improvements and updates.

Talking about updates. Here’s a brief overview of the issues we are currently working on to make NING 3.0 even more user-friendly and versatile:

  • Content moderation

While on NING 2.0 there is a dedicated user role that has access to content moderation, the “admin” role on NING 3.0 goes beyond that. Thus, administrators working with the 3.0 platform can also manage website design, structure, and member profiles.

We do realize the importance of the classic content moderator role (without the extra privileges), and that is something we are planning to implement in the nearest future.

  • Advanced member search

This feature will allow users to find network members by different criteria. We are currently working on the implementation of this feature, and it will be released soon.

Meanwhile, it is possible to use member categories as a workaround. Thus, each category can represent a specific search criterion, and members can filter the general list by categories.

  • NC for Hire
The only think I really miss these days in Ning 3.0 is the "Share This" button which was on 2.0 which quickly allowed admins to share a post with entire network for more engagement....
  • No way to export 3.0 content as a safety precaution? eg if Ning discontinues. TOS - "any products or services offered through the ning platformare provided on an “as is” and “as available” basis."
    • Hi Matt!

We may consider adding something like this in the future, but now we do not offer any tools for exporting content on 3.0.

      Best regards,
      The NING Team
  • Hello everyone , 3.0 is a good platform for people who wont to make a money making site, 2.0 is the best for a social network, many may disagree, but I have had 2.0 for over 10 years now and the only thing I can find not right is support witch they admit to above by ning... Don't let them make you or think you will be better with 3.0 because you wont ... stand our ground and do not let them phase 2.0 out if we can help it ... 3.0 still has not proven to me that it is better then 2.0 and all you still with 2.0 know what I am talking about ... NOW if they do /do away with 2.0 many and along with my self will quit paying for ning ... That's the bottom line of it all...
    • I haven't seen anything yet from ning 3.0 that entices me. Have been on Ning 2.0 over 10 years. Nothing about Ning service is service. Getting anything done at Ning is like mating elephants. Is done at high levels (way too high to actually tell me whats really going on) with lots of noise (well well proforma replies that never actually answer the real question) and takes 5 years to produce a result (maybe not quite that long to be fair). However the point is, if they want to sell more services they need to show that they know what service is.
    • Hello!

If you don't mind sharing with us, what exactly did not suit your needs on 3.0 platform and what aspects of 2.0 are crucial to you?

      Best regards,
      The NING Team
      • Hi Anastasia,
I planned to move to Ning 3 recently after the speed issues were fixed, but then I found:
        1) No moderator roles (which you say is a priority now).
        2) No search box to search a forum category or blog separately. Only site search.

        I just now realized:
        3) Blogs do not have an edit toolbar. Photos are king on my site. With no edit toolbar, blogs are useless. I'll upset members even by offering them. It literally makes Ning 3 unusable.

I really like Ning, and the support people I work with are wonderful. I have been here 10 years, though, and throughout those 10 years Ning has habitually left things critical things undone in current versions to work on an exciting new project. You're doing it right now with that new platform you're developing and so excited about. Make the current platform what it needs to be and then leave. Don't depend on programmers to figure out what's important to your customers Address current customer needs before you start an exciting new project.

I just had a developer do things to my Ning 2 site to make it more usable—including fixing 10-year-old design bugs—and he's about to do more. I had a developer make it mobile responsive in 2014, but it wasn't as polished as it should be. Now it is. But unless things Ning addresses things, I'm going to have to move to an entirely new platform.

And you could fix them so easily.
  • We would like to migrate but the cost is putting us off. We have 1000+ members on our Ning 2.0 Plus network which has a limit of 10,000. The Ning 3.0 basic network has a limit of 1,000 members for a similar price, so we'd need to lose some members. If we migrate to Ning 3.0 Performance (up to 10,000 members) then we will have to pay nearly three times as much.

Is anyone else in a similar position?
    • i have been on Ning 2.0 for over 10 years, we have over 3400 members as a non profit in Africa, it is a bit clunky and I regularly have problems with low end phone users trying to join, but not interested in paying more for a sleeker version that's not much different.
