Current status of the Ning Platform is always available on the Ning Status Blog.

*Disclosure - I created this tip based off of a tip from someone else. Sadly, I no longer remember who I got it from, and a search yielded no clues. So if this is an edited version of something you did, please feel free to let me know so I can give you the appropriate credit!

In any case - this is a VERY simple tip, and really, all it includes is the code to do this, as well as the info on how to change the images. It's a very simple table, so please be sure to be careful not to break the table code (unless you'd rather not have a table layout, of course). Text can be changed quite easily in "Visual Mode" without breaking the code. If you're concerned you might break the code, I like to copy code, paste it in Notepad, and then add spaces so it's SUPER easy to see what I need to change, and so I don't mess anything up. Just remember to remove all the spaces before you paste back into your network, as they sometimes cause issues.

In any case, the code itself will be uploaded via a .txt file below. If you'd like to see a live version of this (including a code box) you can view it here. The code box code is included seperately.

Now to edit the code to fit your network!

Firstly, you're going to want to change the URLs and the name of the network, so make sure you change:

If you want The Human Touch to be even better, don't forget to invite your friends!

I suggest that you edit all the "Codebox Code" first, then you can copy and paste from the codebox at the very bottom (after "The above code results in the following:")... This is the EASIEST way to do it :)

Now, to edit your images... You should try to find images that are similar in appearance (not one round one, one square one, one with splats and one with pillows, etc) and that fit your site's appearance. Also depending on the networks you authorized when you started your network, my images may or may not be appropriate. Therefore, take note of how the code is written, and simply replace the URL code.

It's VERY important that you not add spaces between these codes, as it will cause the images to drop onto the next line and look extremely bad! :(

Hopefully, I've explained this adequately, but if you have any questions, please do let me know! This could also be adapted to groups, although perhaps you'd prefer to add what you do in the group, rather than "features" (unless you have tons of cool features inside your groups too!). Just remember to get the "join" link from that individual group and edit it, as well :)

  • Like the tip, I hope this works out for people. I really like what city of shamballa did with their side bar, they put up a "Have You" box same thing found on the temple and pagan space. You know what I did? I put up a whole different set of member settings. I created this page here, the member control panel on my network. I put it in the custom code and made the link appear at the top of the Ning bar, and put a profile link under the account settings on the right. I also have the control panel page listed under pages in the navigation bar, I have to update it some time but I went around and basically made it possible for members to access almost every feature of the network straight from home so to speak, the idea of a control panel is that with the pages allowing comments, I am able to let members use that as one of several interactive help centers on the site in case they need it. They love it, so I thought I would share because I wonder how I could make the invite feature stand out more. All thoughts welcome, and thanks again for the tip.

    • Nice work Elshara Grin.gif and great job on your site Jannette

    • Elshara, thank you! I haven't had a chance to check out your info, but when I get a few spare moments I will do so and get back to you :)

      • Cool, I made the control panel page white label so anyone could use it. Not sure if I could make that or the site better over all but  any input is welcome,  like I said, I want to make the invite feature more readily available.

  • Thanks for the feature, guys! :)
