Adding tags - need advice

I am working on optimizing content on my site ahead of opening up the content for Google to be able to crawl it. I have been going back to every blog post and image that members have added to try to add relevant tags that Google will find, but I realize that I am not sure what the tags should be. Should I repeat the name of the author of the photo (or is "added by X" which appears at the top, enough?) and the blog post? Should I repeat the name of the photo or post, and what about names and interesting words in the body of the text? Basically I wonder if Google already sees stuff like the name of the photo, who put it up, etc.. and what the tags actually do and what they should be focused on, with regards to Google crawling. Would appreciate any advice. Thanks! Nico

    Hi Nico,
    The easiest way to understand where your keywords are inserted by the Ning platform - - in regards to photos, forums, or anywhere you can add tags, is to view your Source code on any given page. Now, this only shows you where tags are inserted within each web page source. Most platforms that allow you to enter tags or keywords, work the same way. After I show you your tags, I will touch on how Google picks up your tags.

    Go to a page (Photo, Forum, etc...) where you have added tags, and:
    View Source Code
    FireFox: Right-click, view page source
    Internet Explorer: Right-click, view source

    Before we view our source code, let's touch on a couple of points.

    First point of interest: Your photo tag will replace the start of your Page Title.

    Notes of Interest:
    Word on the Internet is: Google quick "surface bots" only pick up your page meta tag for "Title". However, deep penetration bots and spiders will pick up the keyword tags, too. No one knows all of the secrets of how and what Google picks up. I can tell you based on experience and research, your titles are picked up more often. Because, Google quick "surface bots", run more often. So with that said, the title of your page is the most important. Don't get me wrong. Tags are critical in the big picture.

    Let's say you have a photo of Elvis singing Jailhouse Rock. The name of the photo is:
    1957_JailhouseRock
    You have added tags:
    Tags:
    "jailhouse rock",elvis

    Below is what you will see in your source code. Not only will you see this in your source, Google and other Search Engine Spiders are likely to see this, as well.

    Following is the actual source code (portion of head tag) from a Ning Network Photo page. This page contains a photo with the "Name" and "Tags", depicted, above.
    With Photo Tags:
    <head>
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
    <title>1957_JailhouseRock - Ning Directory - Promoting Ning Networks</title>
    <link rel="icon" href="/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />
    <link rel="SHORTCUT ICON" href="/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />
    <meta name="description" content="Social Network Directory / Social Community Directory of Ning Networks. Find Social Networks, add, find Ning Networks. Ning Tips-Ning Design" />
    <meta name="keywords" content="jailhouse rock , elvis" />

    Following is the same page and source code, without the photo tags.
    No Photo Tags entered:
    <head>
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
    <title>1957_JailhouseRock - Ning Directory - Promoting Ning Networks</title>
    <link rel="icon" href="/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />
    <link rel="SHORTCUT ICON" href="/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />
    <meta name="description" content="Social Network Directory / Social Community Directory of Ning Networks. Find Social Networks, add, find Ning Networks. Ning Tips-Ning Design" />

    Notice above - - There are no keywords. I wish Ning would place our default Ning Network keywords in place of tags, when tags are not entered.

    Here is a portion of what a deep penetration spider will pick up on this photo page, when tags are entered:

    Spider View using the keyword Search (jailhouse) for my Spider View results:
    theningdirectory.ning.com/photo/1957_jailhouserock-1?context=latest

    Spider view for:
    theningdirectory.ning.com/photo/1957_jailhouserock-1?context=latest
    Spider View Search Word: jailhouse

    jailhouse occurs 3 time(s)

    I hope this sheds light on the subject. If you would like to utilize the spider view tool, it's available here:

  • In addition to Jen's tips, I recommend reading up what Google themselves say about tagging at their Webmaster Blog.

    Thanks,

      Laura,
      Do you agree with my tips? There's so much controversy and complexity when it comes to Google bots and their algorithm, I'm sometimes apprehensive when I blog about it.
      Best,
      Jen
      • Thanks very much for this great advice. If I understand well, Google will look primarily at titles, but keywords will also show up in deeper searches so it's worth adding back the title and name of author. I will check out Webmaster and the Spider View link. Thanks to you both!
