if you use a social share thingy like sharethis drawing more attention to it can increase the number of shares you get per week
not drasticly but you will notice a difference
now if you look at my site dreadlocks natural dreads you'll notice i used an adaptation of the popular "thought bubble" activity feed code to highlight several elements like table borders on the front page the sign in/signup bod and inbox area once signed in forum posts and blog posts
and finaly the sharethis and google searches as well as the likebox
so 1st off the sharethis on the main pages i used this code
div.searchandshare{vertical-align:middle;color:#fff;border:1px solid #ccc;background-color:#7D7B7D;border-radius:65px;-moz-border-radius:65px;-webkit-border-radius:65px;-webkit-box-shadow:6px 6px 10px #FFC9CF;-moz-box-shadow:6px 6px 10px #FFC9CF;box-shadow:6px 6px 10px #FFC9CF;width:450px;padding:5px;}
1st i wraped the share and search code in a divg giving it a clas searchandshare like this <div class="searchandshare"> code to be highglighted with the shaded border </div>
next i rounded the corners more then the rest of the elements using simular code by changing the radius statements from 50px to 65px
and playerd with the width and padding till i had it just right.
now for the likebox
div.left-panel{clear:left;float:left;margin-left:20px;margin-top:20px;vertical-align:middle;color:#fff;border:1px solid #ccc;background-color:#333;border-radius:65px;-moz-border-radius:65px;-webkit-border-radius:65px;-webkit-box-shadow:6px 6px 10px #FFC9CF;-moz-box-shadow:6px 6px 10px #FFC9CF;box-shadow:6px 6px 10px #FFC9CF;padding:25px;}
.edit_options{float:none;font-size:1.2em;margin:10px 0 1em 5px !important;}
the div.left-panel 1st had the shadowbox added then the content shifted over to fit better and look right
however then i found on vids and pics the .edit_options are was slightly overlapping so had to move that just a bit to look better
if you use it you will want to change at least the background color
using it on discussions and blog oosts gave them a much cooler look but then took more adjustments and changing max_width of images to fit
1 note
in internet explorer 90% of my css is not working properkly..only in forum discussions it works great everywhere else but discussions
i believe thats a ning side bug just be aware that if you experience the same issues you should post it here so i can add it to the report to ning
ui do not believe its css related however since removing all code and css and replacing just 1 thing still dont work right
highlighting my sharethis block has increased my share activity by something like 10-25% over the past 2 weeks

oh a couple more notes u dont gotta do anything as fancy just any way to highlight and draw attention to them i added "thanks for recomending us!" under it 1st that helped alot then adding the shade border helped even more it just draws attention to it so its more likely to be used
the way you do it should fit in to your design ofcouurse
there are many options just adding a lil style to it draws attention and if it fits into yoir sites design makes ot look more like an important part of the page not sometghing just added on
How did you expand your column widths?
its the regular 2 column layout
Soaring Eagle, where did you get the 'share' code to put all those buttons on the home page? Thanks!
sharethis.com
added the options for fb like and g+
then moved the gplus
also i added my homepage url to g+ so all clicks credit to my home page
Thank you, Soaring Eagle!
I have been working on this for the past two hours and something about the code hasn't been working. Right now I have added the "Addthis" code into a text box which is working but the ShareThis on your sight ROCKS!
If it isn't too much trouble: can you tell me exactly what you did to put the code in correctly? There is the button code and then the script code. Where does each get placed? In a text box or in the Custom CSS? Or both?
And do I need any other surrounding code?
By the way I love your site!
Thank you very much for your promptness! Great member of the community,
-Alok
well u put the javascript part in custom code but then the button code in the tecxtbocx or under header instantad box
and heres the trick
ning strips empty spans so add a . (period_ between the <span> and </span>
now to make that . vannish but not get penalized for same color text change the font color of those periods to 1 off of the background
example background 000000 periods 000001
or ffffff fffffe
that way it looks the sane color but isnt
You duh MAN! I will go at it. I kept seeing NING strip it but don't have enough experience to figure out what is going on.
Thank you!
haha took me awhile finaly found out it strips empty tags so i put in a nonbreaking space but after every save it removes the nonbraking space so i had to replace it or they got stripped so i added the periods but looked ugly till i made them almost match the background but slightly off so they wernt invisible ..or same color text to search engines
Now I can officially say YOU RULE! After a long day of tinkering, I can finally say I got it to work with you '.' trick! I don't know how to change the color of the '.'s but I don't even care because they are specks and I finally got something dramatically better than what I had previously.
Thank you for taking your valuable time to assist me!
Also, secretly, I have always wanted dreads and they are probably in my future...We shall see where life leads.
Enjoy your night and thank you again,
-Alok
PS, if you or anyone you knows care about human rights, social justice, the earth, and more, tell them about ChangeActivists.OrgThanks. Likewise, I will do so for the dreads I know, of which there are many!
