NC for Hire

Tumblr Endgame

Tumblr has made a move to change its platform policy and this is causing lots of users to consider alternative networks. I am just wondering if Ning has anything to say about this or not. It's okay if the answer is no. As a social network I thought you might address this in someway. I know you are not positioned to accept the possible influx of members making an exodus from Tumblr because of TOS but I thought you might want to comment on this or not.

Thank you.

  • Certainly the kind of people who have been targeted by the Tumblr have not been accepted into Ning since the end of the Red Light District, but many others, seeing insecurity in the change, are looking for a new platform to blog and could come here; so, for example, WP.com is facing a flood of migrations.

On the other hand, the new WP editor is having a bad welcome from normal users and there is another opportunity for Ning.

Unfortunately there are no tools for migrating or exporting content here today, so far as I know.

Thank you for contributing to the conversation. It may be a bit premature to talk about migration without taking into consideration whether or not what would be migrated is even welcome at Ning. At the moment, it seems not and therefore people will need to keep looking elsewhere.

There is an api and actually when I think of it migrating with a few tools should not be that difficult.

    • Lesson: never put all your "virtual life" on one platform. In fact, I learned this from the former moderator of this community, Erick.

  • Hello!

Unfortunately, we don't really have anything to say on this one. Users who are leaving because of the adult content ban on Tumblr won't be able to use our platform either since our T&C also prohibit such type of content.

I personally hope all affected users will be able to find a new place to stay.

    Best regards,

    The NING Team

Thank you for commenting on this topic. I thought Ning Creators who may have members on that platform (tumblr) should get your thoughts on this matter. I feel it's relevant when a network as large as that one could impact their potential growth and the potential growth of Ning itself. It is no longer a mystery what your thoughts are on the matter and that is better than being in the dark. Thank you.

    • I think you have not noticed a point: Tumblr's decision is not just pushing away who produces adult content, but also who produces other types of content and now has lost confidence in the platform. These are the ones that could have interest in Ning.

Thiago is right in what he is saying. For instance, their content bots have flagged bacon as pornographic. People are not happy with their system blocking legimate posts. Those legitmate users making legitimate posts may want a legitimate optional network to go to. Ning hasn't really encouraged any type of encouragement to network creators or dissatisfied tumblr users to see Ning as a legitimate option.

My point though is the company has changed hands so many times that it would leave one to wonder what has changed with new ownership. Perhaps TOS? Not every management change leads to the wholesale adoption of prior management's structures. In fact, maybe prior management's policy is what lead to that company changing hands.

Your reply is sort of "Thanks for the info but we're good. We don't need any additional users or network creators from Tumblr. We like things just the way they are" and I hope you and the Network Creators do. While your response is adequate it is not necessarily coming from a place of leadership as much as "This is the way things are and that's how it is. Good luck!" This is probably approrpriate to your role on Ning but is there someone there in a leadership role or is it all about fixing bugs and maintaining stability?
