I would like to post a custom header for that page- highlighting the writers...
Does anyone have any ideas?

Not too sure what you have in mind but maybe try using the "Groups" section because each group page can have its own forum section.
To show you an idea, I created a classifieds section. Instead of the 5 categories I have listed there you can swap it for your each writer:

Hi, you could add the tag "Editorials" to selected blogs then link to them. eg. www. ningsite.com/profiles/blog/list?tag=Editorials
Then in Language Editor replace - All Blog Posts Tagged <em>'%1$s'</em> with %1$s
This will display the tag name at the top of the page.
