Ning 3.0?

I know migration isn't something that will soon happen? I have been waiting since 2011 probably earlier. I'd like to get all the new feature of the new 3.0 site. I am almost half way tempted to start from scratch with just my members by asking them to just sign up for the site but to loose all those years of content since 2008 is horryfing. Is there an etimate for the ning 3.0 migration? a year? two years? is it not happening at all?

  • Hi there!

Please check my comment under this discussion https://creators.ning.com/forum/topics/request-member-profile-photo... (the one that has been posted on February 27, 2018 at 3:32am). You will find the info about our plans related to the migration script.

    Best regards,

    Ning Team.

  • It's supposed to be coming around spring of this year.

Ning 3 has come a huge, long way since it's conception. Some things are still the same, but work's being done on it regularly. It's actually somewhat usable now.

For the first time in a long time, I'm starting to see Ning 2 become a thing of the past. Out with the old and in with the new. Ning 3 isn't perfect, as perfect as Ning 2, however it's to the point now where it's a different animal altogether. IN some respects, it's got some polishing to do. But in others, it far ecceeds what 2.0 was designed for.

If you have content from 2008 you want to migrate, just be mindful the process as it stands right now isn't perfect. Which is why migration is taking for ever. I don't think Ning has the developers it used to, which is why features are coming out relatively at a snails pace now compared to what they were before back in 2011.

I wouldn't be a beta migrator though just in case it turns out not as you expect it to. Example: Music Videos, Photo Albums, weren't a part of the original migration script. And all the groups would migrate comments and discussions, but pages within those groups would be lost.

Perhaps it may be a good idea to ask your members what you want to do and build a test network for them to test out. If they are happy with waiting, or if they would rather switch to the new platform. It depends how usable and easy you make the information on Ning 3. You don't just get a features layout page and an insta site. You have to put up everything from the page builder in that case. But you'd have full control of what the pages look like, what content's on them and be able to do more design stuff than you would on 2.0.

Ultimately it's up to you what ever you want to do. No two people will think alike, and there'll be some members who might take some time to adjust to the way things look. But functionality wise, there shouldn't be much of a culture shock. It's still Ning afterall. But it's just not as streamlined as it is on Ning 2.0.

Alternatively what you could do, is hand over the existing Ning 2.0 network you want to someone you trust. And then ask Members who wish to follow you to another site, and move the most important things you want to build upon from there, to the Ning 3.0 site you wish to create with. That way, both are still in existence, but you don't have the burden of having to put up with 2.0 if you're that kean to switch. and members get the best of both worlds.

Once a 2.0 site is down, it's down for ever and there's no turning back. So like I said, it's up to you what you want to do. You do have options though as whatever you wish to fully support is right here.

Regardless, I wish you well with your migration when it becomes available.

    • Hi there!

Just a few corrections, the migration basically doesn't take long it closed now as teh script should be reworked to decrease the losses of the content.

If the 2.0 network is down, it still could be restored if it wasn't removed from the data based so it's better to contact us and check whether the restoration is possible or not.

      Best regards,

      Ning Team.

      • Thanks for the replies. I'll be patient. Lol.

  • Why migrate? There's nothing like Ning out there.

I think the new Ning is excellent with customer/technical services excelling. I can go on Ning.com and be on live chat in an instant and get a resolution to any problem, in minutes. Kryrl, Rachel, Anthony, to name just a few, are so helpful.

The new company is really making progress...I'm very happy:)

    • Hi Philip,

Thanks a lot for your kind words and your support :-) we will continue working in the same direction to deliver the better service in the future.

      Best wishes,

      Ning Team.

    • Lol I didn't say leave Ning...I said migrate to upgrade my 2.0 to 3.0. I get you worship Ning. But I've been waiting to migrate to Ning 3.0 since 2011 or earlier. And I've been with Ning since 2008. I felt that us older Ning creators where left in the dust while new ones got all the great features. Yes Ning is great but sometimes an upgrade can be the refresher one needs

      • Would a beta testing program be efficient for people who wish to have an early migration?

I do know one thing is for sure. Development stopped on the ning platform in May of 2014 entirely. It started up again early 2017. All you can do is be patient as the new owners do keep their promises. They are known to release new features with bugs, which is why if you're willing to wait a bit longer, the finished product has a chance to mature and develop some more before everyone gets it live.
