Hi,

I've used Ning to run a classic car network in the UK since February 2008.
I was bought out by the national owners club a few years ago, but I continue to manage the site.

We've accumulated over 10,000 photos of cars from our members and various rallies etc.
There was so much good content that it was a shame to see some of it lost as it got pushed further and further back in the time line.

Most members aren't savvy enough to tag their photos - so I decided to do something to breathe life into our albums.
I devised a simple framework for tagging photos of our cars - basically Make, Model, Colour, License Plate and if it was an Interior or Engine shot (as the majority of pictures are exterior)
I then formed a team of 4 willing members and we divided the 500 pages of photos into blocks of 10 (this equated to 200 photos per block)
A communal Google spreadsheet was set up for us to record who was working on each block of photos - with a START and FINISH date.
We started with the oldest pictures and worked our way to the newest (as new pictures are being added all the time!)

It's taken 2 months - but the results are impressive.
You can search for all photos of a specific model car and once you find one your interested in you can click on its License plate tag and find all photos of that particular car.
It's fascinating to find photos of your own car taken by people you've never met!
We've had members buy a car and then find it's history by searching for the License plate (even finding pictures of their car with a totally different paint job!)

I'd definitely recommend that members are encouraged to tag their pictures whenever possible - it adds a new dimension to the network!

  • That's really awesome!!! Most of our photos are personal photos (photos of kids, babies, etc) but I hope we can change that in the near future!
