"Yes, Allison, it is disconcerting. We're a professional organization, so we don't allow avatars, and even the photo was real. I have always verified, but by confirming the info is for a real person. That won't cut it anymore. ll be…"

"Good eye for catching that false profile, Jeff. It's quite disconcerting to know that someone would go to the trouble of impersonating an acquaintance. Another good reminder that vigilance pays. Glad to hear the bots are off your back, though!"

Jeff Bean replied to Jeff Bean's discussion 'Have Spammers Changed Tactics?'
"I confirmed the profile was false. In years with Ning networks I've never seen anyone go through that much effort to create a false profile, based on real data for a real person. The only thing false about it is they created their own gmail…"

Have Spammers Changed Tactics?

I noticed that somehow it appears Ning implemented something that finally foiled the "two-letter" spam registrations we've been plagued with for months. I used to get dozens a day - haven't had a single one for a couple weeks now.Or have the spammers just changed tactics?A second profile was created for someone I know personally in Washington State - at 3:00 am his time, yet from an IP address in India.I still have yet to confirm that it is false. But if it is, the falsifiers did enough…See More

Jeff Bean replied to Jeff Bean's discussion 'SSL Digital Certificate for Ning Network?'
"Yep, it's pretty slick. I don't plan on doing any mods myself. Mainly because it wasn't a great use of my time to do that here on Ning, figuring out what CSS/HTML needed to be squeezed into the two boxes we have available to make…"

Jeff Bean replied to Jeff Bean's discussion 'SSL Digital Certificate for Ning Network?'
"BTW, I'm moving my networks to another social network platform, SocialEngine. It's proprietary, but open source, and has a robust developers community it supports. SSL/HTTPS is drop-dead easy because I have it hosted myself."

Ron Fritzemeier replied to Jeff Bean's discussion 'SSL Digital Certificate for Ning Network?'
"You can't use SSL for your own domain that is hosted on Ning. If you are using a yournetwork.ning.com domain you can use their SSL because their cert is for *.ning.com. That being said, SSL won't prevent spammers from spoofing your email…"

Elshara Silverheart replied to Jeff Bean's discussion 'SSL Digital Certificate for Ning Network?'
"If Ning took member privacy seriously, they would implement SSL for sure. Having said that, you could always try redirecting a domain within a domain and see if that works out. Or simply add a sub domain within your domain and have your network be…"
